Temporary, part-time adjunct faculty in the Department of World Languages & Cultures. Programs include Asian Studies (Chinese, Japanese), French, and German. Fully online teaching opportunities are not presently available in this Department. Candidates must be available to teach face-to-face, not remotely.
Master’s degree or equivalent in the language of instruction, or a master’s degree in a related field with at least 18 graduate course hours in the language of instruction. Commitment to quality instruction at the college level is essential.
- An MA in a related field;
- Substantial (minimum 18 credits) graduate-level academic coursework in the relevant national language/literary tradition;
- Graduate-level academic coursework in the theories and methodologies of foreign language acquisition, or other significant training/experience in the same.
- A record of substantial research and professional activity relevant to the target language/literature, including the theories and methodologies of foreign language acquisition.
- Native proficiency in the target language; OR proficiency in the target language equivalent to Advanced Plus or higher, as certified in an ACTFL OPI or other language proficiency assessment that has been validated and administered by a leading foreign language testing body (e.g. ILR, BILC, CEFR, ALTE).
Doctorate in the language and/or its literature. Past record of successful foreign language instruction at the college level. Experience using the Canvas platform is advantageous.

References may be contacted during the review process and/or at the time of hire.
If you are not contacted or hired within this academic year to teach, if you wish to continue to be considered for openings in subsequent years, you will need to resubmit your materials to the next academic year’s adjunct faculty posting (if applicable – not all programs will accept new applications each year).
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Benefits available include health, dental, vision, life and long-term disability insurance, as well as a selection of several defined contribution retirement plans. Dependents and spouses of UNC Employees who are employed at 0.5 FTE or above are eligible for undergraduate dependent tuition grants of up to 50%. These tuition grants will cover in-state tuition charges. Further requirements may exist. Other benefits may be available based on position.
Satisfactory completion of a background check, educational check, and authorization to work in the United States is required after a conditional offer of employment has been made. The successful candidate must submit original transcripts within one (1) month of hire.
