The Civil Service Commission is accepting applications toward establishing a new Prospective Employment List (PEL) for an anticipated academy on May 8, 2023 with end date of November 19, 2023. Once you submit an application and pass the minimum qualifications screening, all updates and/or instructions regarding the hiring process will be sent via email as it becomes available.(Note: Dates are subject to change and this list may be used for additional academies in 2023, so do not hesitate to apply. )

Examples of Duties

A comprehensive list of a police officer's duties is not possible, but officers working within the Aurora Police Department perform some of the following functions:

  • Handle (emergency and non-emergency) calls for service received by our Communications Center.
  • Investigate and determine what type of, or if, crimes have occurred.
  • Make sound decisions using knowledge, training and experience.
  • Positively interact with the public.
  • Problem solve complex community issues and look for innovative solutions to reduce repeat calls for service.



Applicants passing minimum qualifications must also pass the Ergometrics Frontline National video exam. Notifications and information about requirements and deadlines will be sent to you once you complete the online application and pass minimum qualifications. We will accept Frontline scores from the National Testing Network valid through January 17, 2023 to be considered for the May 2023 academy. Aurora is open for selection year round with NTN , so please ensure that you select Aurora as one of the agencies you want to submit your scores to when you register with NTN, or go back and add Aurora if you have already registered and taken the exam before the date of this posting.


2022 Police Salary Information: (This will be updated with increased salaries once the 2023 contract goes into effect.)

2023 ENTRY-LEVEL SALARIES:

Year 1, Grade IV: $65,000
Year 2, Grade III: $72,001
Year 3, Grade II: $79,558
Year 4, Grade I: $86,218
Year 5, Grade I(B): $100,010

Uniforms:
  • Furnished by the Department at no cost. The applicant will supply their own duty weapon meeting published department standards:
    • Glock 19
    • Glock 17
    • Glock model 45
  • Officers receive $1000 body armor vest allowance once every four years.
Vacation and Holidays:
  • Vacation- 80 hours annually (increasing with seniority to a maximum of 200 hours annually).
  • Paid Holidays- 9 days annually.
  • Personal Leave- 28 hours annually after completion of 1 year of continuous service.
Sick Leave:
  • 120 hours annually.
Health, Dental, Vision and Life Insurance:
  • The City of Aurora offers contributions to a variety of health insurance plans, including some where the monthly premium is completely covered by the city. Employees have optional dental, vision and life insurance plans available to them. Employees can also add life insurance coverage for their dependents.
    • Insurance does not take effect until the 1st day of the month following the date of hire (ex. Hire date of May 5th, insurance effective June 1st).
Disability:
  • The City contribution provides death and disability coverage through the Fire & Police Pension Association (FPPA).
Retirement:
  • For 2020 Officers and the City both contribute 12% bi-weekly into a 401(A)-retirement fund with a 5-year vestment.
    • IRS qualified tax-exempt retirement plans meeting 401(A) status can be rolled over when the candidate provides IRS determination letter, subject to approval of the Retirement Board.
Deferred Compensation:
  • Officers will contribute a minimum of 1% of their pre-tax salary, on a bi-weekly basis into a 457 (b) Deferred Compensation plan, managed by Nationwide retirement solutions.
  • Additionally, Officers will also have the option to contribute funds (post-tax, and up to a certain dollar amount) into a Roth plan, also managed by Nationwide retirement solutions.
Training:
  • Annual in-service training. Officers are also eligible for job-related sponsored training.
