A Cappella Performing Ensembles Director Job at Brigham Young University

Provide creative and artistic direction for BYU Vocal Point and Noteworthy, ensuring that all facets of their image–including live performance, online influence, community/global outreach, and recorded material–consistently align with BYU AIMS and objectives of the university. Foster an effective educational environment for performers and technical staff, while maintaining the groups’ highly visible reputations as professional quality musical and entertainment ensembles.

Essential Functions

  • Oversee all creative elements of live musical performances including musical arrangements, choreography, script, and AV/technical support
    • Select concert repertoire and oversee the creation of musical arrangements and choreography.
    • Facilitate rehearsal materials, written charts, and audio tracks.
    • Produce all multimedia material used in concert.
    • Budget for, purchase and design group costuming needs.
    • Budget for, propose and purchase necessary AV equipment, sets, props, etc. as needed to improve show quality.
  • Accompany the group and act as tour manager / on-site producer at all performances and appearances
    • Coordinate and confirm logistical and technical requirements of Vocal Point and Noteworthy concerts with BYU Performing Arts Management, sponsoring hosts, student technicians, and venue personnel.
    • Ensure technical and musical success of live performances, by overseeing performers and technicians, and interfacing with presenters and sponsoring hosts.
  • Quality Control of all recorded material
    • Act as primary artistic liaison between Vocal Point, Noteworthy and BYU Music Group, including all Vocal Point and Noteworthy music and video recordings.
  • Oversee the Vocal Point and Noteworthy Academic Course
    • Audition and select each iteration of Vocal Point and Noteworthy.
    • Coordinate, plan, and execute weekly rehearsals (3+ per week), including offering specialized training in a cappella and vocal music.
    • Evaluate individual performance and issue grades.
    • Attend necessary meetings and facilitate all communications with students and academic related parties.
  • Oversee the design and production of all social media and outreach efforts
    • Approve, create, design, and facilitate media postings.
    • Monitor inquiries, responses, and public comments from global audience.
    • Coordinate non-performance promotional appearances, media interviews, etc.

Education/Experience

Minimum education/experience required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field, or equivalent experience in vocal or a cappella production and performance.

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in Music is preferred, with specific experience and skill unique to contemporary vocal/a cappella performance, live event/concert production, video production, social media, administrative experience. Exhibits strong personal and communication skills.
