Position Summary:

Campbell University seeks a professional academic advisor to provide individual advising to undergraduate students, with direct responsibility for first and second-year students enrolled in degree programs within the College of Arts and Sciences and School of Education. The advisor will be expected to provide support in students’ transition to college, exploration of academic and career goals, curricular planning and progression, and engagement to support goals. The academic advisor will serve as a central point of contact for assigned students and work intentionally and strategically with campus partners, under the supervision of the Director of Academic Advising.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Advise and manage a caseload of approximately 350 students.
  • Meet with all required students in the caseload at least twice per semester for academic progress and planning; available to meet with students for additional advising as needed.
  • Understand and provide accurate information regarding academic policy and procedures, curriculum requirements, and programs of study to assist in short-term and long-term academic planning and career goal clarification.
  • Instruct students on use of degree planning tools for personal and professional growth and goal attainment.
  • Acquaint students with campus resources and educational opportunities, and make proper referrals when necessary.
  • Monitor ongoing academic progress of students in the caseload and recommend, when necessary, strategies to improve.
  • Keep accurate records of student contacts and maintain confidentiality.
  • Serve as a liaison between Academic Advising and assigned academic departments as well as student support units.
  • Establish and maintain collegial, respectful relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and families.
  • Represent Academic Advising at various committees, Admissions events, and other university-related functions, including some evening and weekend events.
  • This position demands accuracy, honesty, integrity and the ability to work with the Christian mission of Campbell University.

Education/Experience:

  • Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, or related field and 1 year related experience; or bachelor’s degree and 3 years related experience (will consider experience gained through graduate work).
  • Demonstrated commitment to the educational development of students.
  • Comprehensive computer skills and experience, with the ability to quickly learn technology platforms for student success, including Colleague, Student Planning, and Starfish.
  • Experience advising students in natural sciences and/or pre-health profession programs will be strongly considered.
  • Experience in a higher education or non-profit sector is also desirable.

  • Student-centered advising skills - ability to create a positive and productive advising interactions through demonstration of skills such as listening, flexibility, patience, receptivity, and responsiveness; ability to effectively assess of students’ needs, goals, and concerns and provide appropriate response.
  • Interpersonal skills - ability to collaborate and communicate effectively and respectfully with colleagues, supervisors, students, and families, among other populations; strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ethical advising practices - ability to exercise high level of confidentiality, independent initiative, and ethical judgement congruent with university and professional ideals.
  • Organizational skills - ability to maintain records and have ready access to resources necessary for successful completion of position duties.
  • Proficiency with social media platforms and other methods of digital communication.
  • Technological skills appropriate for performance of job duties.
  • Broad knowledge of Campbell University policies and procedures and FERPA guidelines.
