The Academic Advisor’s primary function will be to mentor and advise prospective and current undergraduate students through their academic trajectory, lead orientations, aid recruiting efforts, plan student events/activities that directly support student success, and collaboratively bolster the work of the Student Success Team under the direction of the Director of Academic Services. This position serves upper- and lower-division Business students and is the designated Advisor for students in our Eastside Leadership Center (ELC) in Bellevue. This position does not include supervisory duties.

The ELC in Bellevue is the primary work location for this advising position. As of Winter quarter 2023, the ELC will be located on the Bellevue College campus. The ELC is a partnership between the UW Bothell School of Business and Bellevue College. Students in our ELC program can earn their Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a Supply Chain Management option or Entrepreneurship concentration. The ELC runs on a cohort model with a consistent course schedule for students who work and cannot easily alter their schedules each quarter. The cohort model appeals to students who like to learn within a group, and seek camaraderie, interaction, and support from others.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Academic Advising and Student Retention

  • Advise students remotely and in person at our Bothell and Bellevue ELC locations regarding academic planning, program eligibility requirements, degree and School of Business requirements, grant and scholarship opportunities, and career preparation

  • Educate students about the relationship between their strengths and interests, and opportunities in the University curriculum and beyond

  • Assist students in the interpretation of ELC program and university requirements and policies

  • In collaboration with the Director of Academic Services and Student Success Team, continually identify and develop student-friendly improvements in the Team’s work to attract, welcome, and facilitate underrepresented and minoritized students’ success

  • Create, maintain and/or provide accurate information on student success including academic progress, student engagement, success efforts, retention, and graduation

  • Track quarterly student progress using databases such as EARS, SDB, Slate, and spreadsheets such as Google and Excel

  • Collaborate with the Student Success Team on new student orientations and advising workshops

  • Ensure ELC student retention and reinforce the cohort model through planning and hosting activities and events to increase peer and faculty interaction

  • In coordination with the Direct of Academic Services, identify and implement innovative and streamlined advising processes through in-person and virtual channels

  • Participate as an active member of the university’s Community of Professional Advisors (CPA), maintain compliance with advising standards, and participate in advisor training and recommended professional development opportunities

  • Design and update orientation and onboarding materials and maintain student handbook of policies and procedures

  • Process petitions and paperwork for independent studies, internships, and specialty courses

  • Serve as School of Business representative in various campus committees and act as a liaison with the Registrar’s Office, CIE, DEM, and other campus partners


  • Recruiting Services and Event Planning

  • Work with School of Business colleagues to reduce and/or eliminate admission entry barriers for incoming students Educate Bellevue College Advisors about the ELC

  • Collaborate with colleagues in Bellevue College’s Business Transfer Program and UW Bothell Admissions to recruit Bellevue College students through activities such as hosting information sessions, visiting Bellevue College Business classes, and communicating with prospective students

  • Answer questions from internal and external prospective students regarding academic programs, admission requirements, transfer requirements, and degree requirements

  • Assist the Director of Academic Services and Marketing Specialist to develop processes, reports, strategies, events, marketing, and recruiting materials to track and enhance recruiting and admissions results

  • Assist with ELC web content updates


  • MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Education, Social Sciences, or related field from a regionally-accredited institution

  • At least 3 years of student advising, recruiting, or teaching experience in higher education


  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Solid DEI lens and willingness to learn and grow

  • Good comprehension of advising strategies, best practices, and theory related to transfer students, first-generation students, and/or minoritized students

  • Proficiency in standard office software (e.g., Microsoft 365, Google documents, spreadsheets and presentations, and web applications)


  • DESIRED:

  • Experience working with students from diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds

  • Experience working with transfer students from community colleges

  • Ability to develop positive, productive relationships with students, university faculty, staff, and external partners

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing

  • Experience with UW policies and student databases and systems (e.g., Navigate, SDB, EARS, Slate)

  • Comfort using and analyzing data


  • WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • The in-person work location for this position is located in Bellevue, with occasional meetings at UW Bothell

  • This position will have access to a private space for academic advising meetings within a shared office environment

  • The scheduled hours for this position align with the typical School of Business hours of Mondays through Fridays from 9 AM to 5 PM, with the possibility of four 10-hour workdays in summers

  • This position requires the ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for recruitment, orientation, convocation, and/or commencement events

  • This position reports to the Director of Academic Services
