ACCOUNTING MANAGER


Position Overview

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Accounting Manager directly manages the main functions and staff of the finance department, including accounts payable, receivables, payroll, budgeting, and financial reporting by following generally accepted accounting principles, internal policies, and compliance with government contracts policies and procedures. The Accounting Manager oversees the development, implementation, and efficiency of financial systems. The Accounting Manager assumes responsibility for the financial function in the absence of the Chief Financial Officer.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee the daily operations of the Finance Department.
  • Oversee all employees involved in the accounting process, including payroll, receivables, payables, and accounting records.
  • Review general ledger to ensure proper posting of transactions to cost centers and funding sources.
  • Review and reconcile balance sheet accounts
  • Review contract billing to ensure proper allocation and timely submission.
  • Ensure timely monthly closing of general ledger activities and contract invoicing.
  • Monitor and analyze revenue and expenditure and produce monthly budget variance financial reports for programs, departments, and functions.
  • Assist Chief Financial Officer with forecasting/budgeting activities.
  • Review and assess financial systems efficiency and initiate implementation/corrective actions on an ongoing basis.
  • Responsible for ongoing knowledge and understanding of agency-wide budget and cost allocation plan
  • Ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and the organization’s policies, procedures, and contracts.
  • In conjunction with Chief Financial Officer, the Accounting Manager coordinates annual external audits, City & County fiscal monitoring, yearly reviews, and other governmental audits.
  • Support the programs and functions leadership with budget management and other finance-related issues.
  • Support Chief Financial Officer in meeting Finance goals and objectives.
  • Serve as backup for payroll processing, receivables, and payables.
  • Responsible for the financial function in the absence of the Chief Financial Officer.
  • Ensures proper maintenance of fiscal files to document transactions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer.


Qualifications, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, business administration, or related field and/or minimum of five years’ experience in accounting/and or finance preferably in the non-profit sector.
  • High degree of knowledge in enterprise-level accounting software and payroll is a plus.
  • Experience implementing varying systems to improve the finance function.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and maintain confidentiality
  • Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to work with a diverse staff are essential to successfully carry out the duties of the position
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel, etc.).
  • Essential functions of the position may require use of a telephone, working at a standard computer terminal, and the ability to follow reasonable ergonomic recommendations, sit for long periods, stand, reach, bend, lift,and carry up to 20 pounds
  • Criminal background check, fingerprint imaging, and tuberculosis (TB) clearance required post-offer.
