Acquisitions Editor, Moon Travel Guides Job at Hachette Book Group
Summary:
Moon Travel Guides was founded in 1973 with a mission to advocate for independent, active, and conscious travel. We started out with guides to Asia printed by founder Bill Dalton on a Xerox machine—and nowadays, we’re the #1 publisher of travel guides to the Americas and have expanded our coverage globally. We’re published by Avalon Travel, a Hachette Book Group company. Our program is simple: Wherever we cover, we prioritize local businesses, outdoor recreation, and traveling strategically and sustainably; we look for authors who share those values and are excited to share their destinations with the world.
We are seeking an Acquisitions Editor to manage scheduling, editorial development, manuscript delivery, and author recruitment for our wide-ranging list of travel guides. Responsible for about 20 titles per year, the Acquisitions Editor will be overseeing the revision of successful and ever-evolving titles, as well as signing new authors to write the locally informed, strategic, and sustainability-conscious guides for which Moon is known. This is a dynamic and creative role that requires strong developmental editing, organization, communication, and project management skills to bring in and shape high-quality travel content—in the form of text, maps, and photos—on tight schedules. In addition, the Acquisitions Editor should have a keen understanding of the business of publishing, delving into market trends, sales analysis, and reader feedback to inform decisions.
The ideal candidate would have previous experience signing authors and developing editorial products and content, be adept at managing writers for long-term projects, have excellent project management, critical thinking, and communication skills, and be very familiar with Moon Travel Guides. A love of travel is essential, and being an avid guidebook user is very helpful.
Moon is committed to publishing books that give travelers the information they need to have unforgettable journeys, whether they are headed somewhere close to home or going on a far-flung trip of a lifetime. The Acquisitions Editor is essential to making that happen.
Specific responsibilities:
- Draft revision plans and confirm revision schedules with authors
- Recruit new authors and work with potential authors on proposals
- Research the market and destinations of assigned projects, including analyzing competing titles
- Present titles at acquisitions committee meetings
- Negotiate contract terms with authors and agents
- Enter title data into HBG systems and run P&Ls for assigned projects
- Coordinate with managing editor and Production, Cartography, and Marketing departments to ensure quality of assigned projects
- Understand, develop, and implement the applicable Moon series guidelines on all projects
- Keep up with trends and changes in travel and travel guidebooks
- Manage special book projects as needed
Essential skills and experience:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Previous developmental editing experience
- Ability to juggle multiple projects with overlapping deadlines
- Strong track record of delivering well-executed projects on schedule
- Flexibility and a positive attitude
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office on both Mac and Windows platforms and a fearless attitude toward technology
- At least four years of publishing or related experience
