$18-$45 Per Hour

SCHEDULE:

Must be available between 2:30pm-6pm OR 6pm-10pm, Mon-Fri with some Saturdays. Scheduling may vary due to

needs of program. Some occasional special events (will require you to work late evenings and accompany youth on trips

or events). This position is performance based and is also contingent on funding availability

JOB SUMMARY:

As part of our Youth Services Department’s vision: All Youth Services staff will assist in promoting growth, leadership and

positive self-image in all young people at all of our Grand Street Settlement sites. Our Activity Specialists will assist in the

day-to-day functioning of program and ensure that youth are learning and building hard skills. This position is based on

youth interest; must maintain a minimum of 15 youth in group.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS:

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent required; College Degree Preferred
  
• Must have 3+ years’ experience working in specialized field
  
• Must have experience working with and devising curricula around specialization
  
• Ideal candidate has previous experience with classroom instruction and/or facilitating lessons in specialized fields
  
• Candidate must be very responsible; organized & demonstrate positive communication skills
  
• Ideal candidate is personable, energetic, & enthusiastic
  
• Candidate must successfully complete the following: NYSDOH Fingerprinting Screening; New York State Clearance Review Background Check; 3 Reference Check; Physical w/ updated TB Test ( Fees may apply)
• Candidates must be able to communicate effectively with all students while remaining professional at all times and be able to motivate the students while setting an example in all areas, including timeliness, attendance and most importantly, professionalism
• If offered the position, must submit $25 fee for NY State Clearance Review

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Must complete 12 hours of trainings as per school- age child care requirements within the first three months of hire and attend two mandatory agency-wide Professional Development trainings
  
• Responsible for supervising all participants particularly during special activities
  
• Responsible for maintaining classroom space in an organized and clean fashion
  
• Responsible for maintaining daily log of all incidents/ injuries
  
• Chaperone youth group during trips and other field activities
  
• Assist with all aspects of programming (i.e. following organizations mission; supervising all youth, working collectively and communicating with all staff)
  
• Administrative duties includes: follow up calls to parents
  
• Attend all required department/ agency meetings and/ or trainings
  
• Create lessons and curriculum around specialty
  
• Implement and facilitate projects and recreational activities for school year or summer camp
  
• Take initiative to assist program participants and group leaders as seen fit
  
• Maintain program supplies and proper use of all
  
• Help enforce all rules and regulations and codes of conduct
  
• Other duties as assigned

Activity Specialist Components/ Positions Available:

Photography Specialist:

As part of our Youth Services Department’s (YSD) vision, all YSD Staff will assist in promoting growth, leadership and positive self-image in all young people during the school year and the summer. The photography teaching artist will promote artistic expression, and a deeper understanding of the dynamics of photography to middle school aged youth. The photography teaching artist will be responsible for creating interactive, hands-on lessons and learning experiences that allow students to discover, explore, and develop skills in composition, lighting, framing, perspective as well as basic camera use.

Athletics Specialist:

As part of our Youth Services Department’s (YSD) vision, all YSD Staff will assist in promoting growth, leadership and positive self-image in all young people during the school year and the summer. The athletics specialist will promote health and wellness to middle school aged youth. Skills and drills, intramural as well as outside tournaments, practices, and curriculum based lesson planning are integral parts of this activity. In the end, students will be able to gain knowledge on leading healthy, active lives and learn how to play competitive sports and/or individualized sports.

Music Specialist:

As part of our Youth Services Department’s (YSD) vision, all YSD Staff will assist in promoting growth, leadership and positive self-image in all young people during the school year and the summer. Highly skilled music instructors will deliver performance and curriculum based lesson planning in a fun and relaxed environment. In the end, students will be able to gain knowledge on various forms of music, have beginner’s comprehension of sheet music, learn how to play string and percussion instruments and better understand music theory.

Dance Specialist:

As part of our Youth Services Department’s (YSD) vision, all YSD Staff will assist in promoting growth, leadership and positive self-image in all young people during the school year and the summer. The dance specialist will instruct high quality culturally inclusive performing arts based activities and/or choreography that promote self-expression and cultural awareness to middle school aged youth. Skills, form, cultural context, as well as curriculum based lesson planning are integral parts of this activity. In the end, students will be able to gain knowledge on various genres of dance, self-expression through visual arts and alternative ways to lead healthy and active lives.

Culinary Arts Specialist:

As part of our Youth Services Department’s (YSD) vision, all YSD Staff will assist in promoting growth, leadership and positive self-image in all young people during the school year and the summer. The Culinary specialist will enrich academic learning and foster the personal development and leadership skills of middle school age youth. Develop and implement high-quality hands on project based/service learning lesson plans associated with building basic culinary skills and gain knowledge of international cuisine. In the end, students will be able to gain a deeper understanding and reinforce existing knowledge of culinary arts and related career paths.

Journalism & Communications Specialist:

As part of our Youth Services Department’s (YSD) vision, all YSD Staff will assist in promoting growth, leadership and positive self-image in all young people during the school year and the summer. The journalism teaching artist will engage students in creative writing, the creation of student work in print & media and will also produce weekly school newspaper/videos. The program will promote the combination of creative expression and hard skills for writers at all levels. The journalism teaching artist will be responsible for creating interactive, hands-on lessons and learning experiences that allow students to develop critical thinking skills, computer literacy, digital media skills along with an introduction to global and social issues.

Fine Arts & Creative Expression Specialist:

As part of our Youth Services Department’s (YSD) vision, all YSD Staff will assist in promoting growth, leadership and positive self-image in all young people during the school year and the summer. The Arts & Expression will promote exploration of the fine arts through different mediums and styles (sculpture, painting, drawing, etc.) with middle school aged youth. Classes should incorporate hands on lessons, background history, opportunities for youth choice and culminating projects. We are seeking a highly motivated, reliable candidate with a strong track record of working with young people at a beginner level. In the end, students will be able to gain knowledge and exposure to the arts through engaging and active afterschool setting.

STEM & Lego Robotics Specialist:

As part of our Youth Services Department’s (YSD) vision, all YSD Staff will assist in promoting growth, leadership and positive self-image in all young people during the school year and the summer. The STEM/Robotics specialist will enrich academic learning, and foster the personal development and leadership skills of middle school age youth. Develop and implement high-quality hands on project based lesson plans aligned to Common Core Standards for science. In addition, instructor will help prepare participants to compete in a Lego Robotics competition in March. In the end, students will be able to gain a deeper understanding and reinforce existing knowledge of science and science/math related career paths.

Chess Specialist:

As part of our Youth Services Department’s (YSD) vision, all YSD Staff will assist in promoting growth, leadership and positive self-image in all young people during the school year and the summer. The Chess instructor will promote critical thinking, young people learn to categorize information, reason by analogy, follow a logical sequence of ideas, recognize and calculate principles, and analyze practical outcome. Novice players will be taught with basic rules, pieces, and how to checkmate. More experienced players will learn to have different openings and defense strategies, various tactics, and will be given the opportunity to challenge themselves by solving chess puzzles. Chess will helps young people learn to follow rules, take turns, accept responsibility for their decisions, respect tradition, demonstrate good sportsmanship and have fun in both victories and defeats.
