Position Description and Specifications
POSITION TITLE: English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor
SUPERVISOR’S TITLE: Executive Director and ESL Lead Instructor

GENERAL SUMMARY: ESL Instructor duties are assigned and supervised by the Executive Director and ESL Lead Instructor. This position does require some evening and weekend duties. The ESL Instructor is responsible for fulfilling prescribed ESL curricular and extracurricular program guidelines to achieve program goals for students: academic performance, retention, social interaction and cultural education.
The position will perform all duties as assigned by the Executive Director to ensure goals are met. The position requires:
- Prepare course syllabi, plan lessons, and implement prescribed academic curriculum and assessments to meet program academic performance goals for students.
- Daily maintain classroom student behaviors that promote rapid and retained education of reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Maintain a safe environment for learning.
- Grade all assessments, record grades and provide student feedback.
- Maintain class files: attendance roster, student grades, progress assessments, term grade sheets, and other relevant documentation for each student.
- Maintain a professional association affiliation, and complete assigned in-service tasks.
- Share student progress and lesson plans with other instructors.
- Attend required English Language Institute meetings, training and workshops.
- Complete an annual professional development plan that includes at least 2 professional development activities and 2 in-service activities, including documentation.
- Assist with program administrative duties as needed.
- Attend faculty meetings as scheduled.
Education and Experience
A faculty member teaching this course shall have at least one of the following credentials at a
minimum:
- Clear spoken and written English skills AND Master’s degree in ESL/EFL with 1 year of ESL teaching experience
OR
- Clear spoken and written English skills AND Master’s degree in a related field with a bachelor’s degree ESL/EFL with 1 year of ESL teaching experience
OR
- Clear spoken and written English skills AND Master’s degree in a related field with a bachelor’s degree a related field AND ESL Certification (TESL or TESOL) from an accredited program or institution with 1 year of ESL teaching experience
Evaluation
The End of Course Surveys and Instructor Evaluations contain evaluative criteria applicable to this position. The Lead Instructor will evaluate the Instructor, based on his/her performance. A formal review will be conducted within the first 30 days of hire, and at least biannually. Critical areas include (1) exceptional classroom management and (2) the progress shown by the students on several graded assignments per week, midterms, finals, and standardized tests.
