Land Development Services (LDS) is the steward of the county's land development and building construction codes and regulations, and its staff members embrace their essential role as "first preventers." Every day, through careful review, permitting and inspection of site and building construction, our staff protect the health, safety, welfare, and environment for those who live in, work in, and visit Fairfax County. Our department also serves as the gateway to much of the county's economic development, reviewing over 30,000 building and site plan submissions, issuing nearly 70,000 building permits, and conducting over 220,000 building and site inspections each year. This position provides administrative support for work unit by managing document intake, processing, and final disposition of land development related agreements, applications from customers. Facilitates payments from customers by preparing fee transmittals for processing by the Cashier's Office. Administers intake programs of the Customer and Technical Support Center customers. Receives, reviews, date stamps, and processes documents, forms, and agreements, site construction plans and other development transactions and distributes accordingly. Communicates with developers, contractors, engineers, citizens, and other county agencies to facilitate compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and policies in regard to conservation escrows, agreements, permits process, permit issuance, conservation agreement submission, and plan status. Maintains inventory of customer handouts and forms. Complies with Land Development Service's safety programs and guidelines. Position works under the supervision of a Customer and Technical Support Center supervisor and based on area of assignment,

Note: The assigned functional areas of this position are general office administration, customer service, sorting mail, and receptionist/public contact setting.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to high school graduation and two years of experience providing administrative support in the assigned functional area(s).

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background to the satisfaction of the employer.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two years experience assisting customers with technical questions in a fast-paced environment, both in person and on the telephone.
  • Two years experience working as part of an administrative support team.
  • General knowledge of land development processes and permitting applications.
  • General knowledge of administrative functions related to support of technical review staff, including ability to work in multiple software systems.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to bend, squat, and twist upper body to maneuver in workstation; and the ability to operate keyboard driven equipment. Visual acuity to read data on computer monitor. Ability to stand, stoop and bend from up to an hour and to lift moderately heavy objects such as boxes of files or large construction plan sets. Ability to move tables and chairs. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
