THE
DIVISION
DCR’s Division of Soil and Water Conservation staff administer nonpoint source pollution control programs required by state law. They include nutrient management, agricultural best management practices, resource management planning, shoreline erosion advice, and the administrative, technical and financial support of Virginia’s 47 soil and water conservation districts. The staff also administers the Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) dam safety program through which 12 districts are helped with the upkeep of 104 dams. Staff members in the central office and seven regional offices deliver services through soil and water conservation districts, local governments and nonprofit groups, businesses and citizens. DSWC staff in Richmond also serve as a resource for field staff.
THE
OPPORTUNITY
The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Division of Soil and Water Conservation, is seeking an individual to serve as an Agricultural Best Management Practice (BMP) Engineering Specialist. This position will provide technical assistance and support to Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs); perform design, construction inspections, and create as built drawings for agricultural BMPs; review designs by SWCD staff for compliance with USDA-National Resource Conservation Service standards and specifications; and perform other duties related to the District Engineering Services Program.
Minimum Qualifications
Considerable demonstrated knowledge of and application of engineering principles for site specific water quality problems related to agricultural production. Considerable demonstrated knowledge of construction and survey practices. Experience working with agricultural producers to solve water quality problems related to agricultural activities. Demonstrated previous experience providing effective oral and written communications. Ability to work without close supervision
Preferred Qualifications
Degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or other related scientific field or demonstrated knowledge of and experience with one or more of the following: environmental sciences, soil sciences, or biological sciences. Experience working with Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) conservation practice standards and also experience interacting with, state, local officials and other federal officials. Engineering Job Approval Authority previously issued by USDA-NRCS for one or more conservation practices is required. Valid driver’s license.
Special Requirements
Ability to travel daily with occasional overnight travel required.
