The AIM Upward Bound Youth Academy program is a federally funded grant program that provides fundamental support to underrepresented high school students to increase the rate at which participants succeed in secondary and post-secondary education and pursue rewarding tech-enabled careers. The Youth Academy serves high school students from low-income families and families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree.
The Youth Academy programs at AIM Institute serve students from Omaha Bryan, Papillion-LaVista, Papillion LaVista-South, and Thomas Jefferson high schools. AIM Institute is seeking a variety of part-time instructors for its 6-week summer program in the subjects of English/Writing, Math, and Science to occur at the University of Nebraska Mammel Hall and Peter Kiewit Institute.
Minimum Qualifications: Certified teacher
Preferred Qualifications: High school or college teaching experience; Must be able to teach a mixed ability class
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Create and implement a CREATIVE, ENERGETIC, and ENGAGING subject-specific curriculum aligned with this year’s specific theme of being future-ready.
- Attend paid orientation from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM on 5/26/2023.
- Develop and submit all supplies and equipment lists by 5/26/2023 to the Summer Academy Director.
- Develop and submit all lesson and assessment plans by 6/01/2023 on the AIM Student Portal.
Be a positive and available role model to students as they develop their confidence and motivation to succeed, despite the challenges faced by students in this program.
Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Possess excellent interpersonal, communication (oral and written) skills
- Demonstrate the motivation to work with students from diverse backgrounds
- Demonstrate patience in working with teens, and have a genuine ability to connect with teens
- Possess discretion, sound judgment, and solid decision-making skills.
- Be sensitive to the needs of diverse and disadvantaged populations
- Deliver engaging and age-appropriate instruction that keeps youth intellectually curious, interested, and focused
- Be adaptable and flexible regarding scheduling to meet programming needs.
Other Details:
- Must be able to travel to and from Omaha, NE
- Must be available to commit to teaching classes from 6/5/2023 - 7/19/2023
Must be available between the hours of 8:00 am – 1:00 pm, Monday – Friday
- Must be able to teach 5 identical 35-minute classes each of these 3 days a week
Pay rate is $30 per hour of teaching (paid semi-monthly.) An extra 1.5 hours per day is also paid for planning, grading, and previously uploading the day’s lesson into the portal.
A criminal background check will be conducted.
