PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The primary purpose of this position is to ensure that applications running on district servers will meet required availability and performance targets during normal daily operations or during a disaster. The Application Server Administrator will ensure this by planning, documenting, implementing, monitoring, and maintaining hardware and applications in the datacenter. This position works closely with the Network and Cybersecurity Administrators to ensure that the district datacenters are up to date, secure, and recoverable during a disaster.

This responsibility demands expertise in server operating systems, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, virtualization, disaster recovery, and basic server administration. To perform the duties of this job, this position requires the use of systems analysis techniques and procedures to identify and resolve hardware and software problems.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, management information systems, engineering, or a related field (Preferred)
  • Minimum of Four (4) years of experience in a similar role may substitute in lieu of a degree.
  • Certifications:
  • Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) or Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (Preferred)
  • Microsoft 365 Certified: Enterprise Administrator Expert (Preferred)

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of system management (e.g., system patching, backups, restores).
  • Knowledge of server management (e.g., monitoring key statistics, managing infrastructure and applications, troubleshooting server problems, etc.).
  • Knowledge in upgrading software and hardware including the planning and rolling out of servers and applications.
  • Server Virtualization and cloud computing.
  • Knowledge of storage technologies.
  • Ability to evaluate data and business requirements.
  • Strong organizational, communication (verbal and written), and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to organize, plan, and implement applications with minimal guidance and oversight.
  • Ability to work off-hours occasionally and when required to address critical concerns.

Server Administration:

  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft server administration, including system stability, integrity, and troubleshooting.
  • Expert knowledge of monitoring practices for servers, databases, and applications.
  • Proficiency in backup integrity and recovery coordination along with disaster preparedness planning.
  • Proficiency with Active Directory, ADFS, DHCP, IIS, and DNS server roles.
  • Expert knowledge of server Virtualization technologies.

Database Administration:

  • Expert knowledge of SQL server database administration.
  • Expert knowledge of high availability database solution configurations.
  • Expert knowledge of database troubleshooting and performance tuning.
  • Export knowledge of database backup/restore methodologies.

Minimum Experience:

  • Five years practical experience in end-user devices, servers, and networking
  • Related experience may be considered

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Determines systems specifications and working parameters for hardware/software compatibility. Ensures that the infrastructure in use aligns to the business strategy and direction.
  • Develops solutions in accordance with standards, policies, benchmarks, and guidelines for managing the infrastructure now and in the future, maximizing availability, supportability, and operability.
  • Ensures compatibility with existing and emerging infrastructure and services.
  • Leads the system integration testing of new operating systems, system utilities, and hardware technologies. Ensures that tests evaluate all possible impacts of new technology on the current infrastructure.
  • Maintains optimal performance of infrastructure resources. Defines and ensures continuous monitoring procedures are set according to the standard procedures and requirements. Forecasts utilization patterns and identifies modifications or upgrades.
  • Configure, manage, and support the districts Microsoft 365 tenant with a focus on Messaging and Identity.
  • Works with auditors, security groups, and data owners periodically to ensure compliance with governance and regulations.
  • Provide input on procedures for granting user access to systems environment. Ensures procedures for granting access are followed and provides system access for authorized users.
  • Prepares overall installation plans based on the system delivery schedule, ensuring coordination of schedules with staff, vendor, or other teams.
  • Analyzes audit trails to detect systematic security violations. Makes recommendations to improve security and participates in investigations as needed. Reports security issues when appropriate.
  • Perform and automate routine maintenance tasks for infrastructure systems: provision resources, configure backups, apply updates. Establishes requirements, methods, and procedures.
  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and corrects hardware, software, and network problems. Plans and schedules hardware and software repair and installations. Performs structural changes when necessary. Ensures that system infrastructure is maintained according to lifecycle management standards and policies.
  • Leads the implementation of contingency plans including reliable backup and restore procedures. Maintains inventory of spare hardware.
  • Produces and maintains system inventories, standards, operating procedures, and documentation.
  • Participates in and may lead projects to implement or enhance IT services. Coordinates systems development activities with other groups. Participates in short- and long-term planning.
  • Evaluates future technologies and makes recommendations for software and hardware upgrades. Reviews vendor proposals for new hardware and software.
  • Develop, manage, and administer policies and procedures to ensure access, performance, continuity, integrity, and security of MS-SQL databases.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains procedures for ensuring the security and integrity of district servers, databases, and software applications.
  • Manage, monitor, and maintain SQL databases ensuring database integrity, stability, and security.
  • Maintain database backup and recovery infrastructure.
  • Provide systems engineering and administrative support across a wide variety of Windows-based software and hardware systems, with an emphasis on SQL.
  • Provide on-call support as scheduled by supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

  • Remain update to date on the latest Server Administration best practices.
  • Stay abreast and updated on the latest in Virtual Machine Technology and Cloud services.
  • Confer with the Director of Information Systems and Chief of Technology and Innovation regarding District activities in which regulatory compliance and/or training are involved.

Frequent in-district and occasional in-state or national travel. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours.
