Assistant Curator
Excellent opportunity for an Assistant Curator to work with the Lead Curator in helping to select, prepare for, research and maintain the current and future exhibits as they fall in line with the Washington Pavilion Management, Inc. (WPMI) mission. Giving proper oversight to our galleries, sculpture garden, and curation storage facilities. This position is going to get to be part of an Accredited Art Museum bringing memorable experiences to the community of Sioux Falls and the Region. They will get to be part of a very close-knit team that cares deeply about company culture and professional development. The Visual Arts team is driven by excellence and meeting the needs of our guests. The Assistant Curator is a full-time, non-exempt level position with day hours Monday-Friday with some flexibility and at times evenings and weekends depending on needs of the museums.
What you will do!
- Cross-train with Lead Curator and provide support in developing a well-rounded schedule of exhibitions and timelines.
- Maintain professional standards in the installation of exhibitions and in the care and management of artwork guided by the American Alliance of Museums Best Practices
- Assist in the development and preparation of labels and interpretive information for each exhibit
- Responsible for registration and the management of permanent collection, traveling exhibits, loaned artworks and exhibits within the Visual Arts Center through collection management system
- Prepare exhibit spaces and exhibit materials including signage, framing, mating, artist statements, lighting, installation, and painting walls for Museums
- Manage condition reports for incoming and outgoing works of art
- Safely package artworks and arrange for the shipment or transport of artwork
- Support with the organization, maintenance, and housekeeping of the art storage areas
- Document museum exhibitions and museum activities through digital photography
- Collaborate with full-time staff, part-time staff, interns, and volunteers who assist with installations and with collections management
- Assisting with the leading and training of exhibit tours, art center events, and with art center activities as assigned by the Curator of Art
- Perform any other duties that may be required to support the effective operation and mission of the WPMI.
What you will need!
- Bachelor of Art in studio art, art history, business, or related field
- Basic word processing and computer skills
- Basic Design skills
- Experience handling art, matting, and framing
- Experience with cataloging artwork
- Good organizational and communication skills
- Ability to work occasional night and weekend hours – e.g. Sidewalk Arts Festival, Free First Friday, Annual Gala, Spooky Science, etc.
- Ability to climb ladders, install artwork, and light exhibits
- Ability to lift and move display cases, crates, and heavy works of art
- Ability to multi-task and plan work activities in advance
- Good workbench and technical hand-eye coordination skills
- Self-motivation and ability to schedule and perform tasks with limited supervision
- Desire to take the extra step toward quality control beyond what is minimally acceptable
- Willingness and ability to follow instructions and established professional procedures
- Physical ability to move throughout the entirety of the Washington Pavilion building, stand for long periods of time, climb stairs frequently, bend, reach, and lift up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends and Holidays when needed, role is Monday-Friday day shift as a FT position.
