POSITION OVERVIEW:
Advise and educate students and alumni in their development as creative professionals
through one-on-one counseling and development of educational and informational
programming. Supervise and mentor students enrolled in the College’s Internship for
Credit Program and communicate with their internship supervisors to ensure optimal
learning experiences for interns.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Counsel students and alumni in all aspects of career development, including: internship and employment research; job search and networking strategies; cover letter, resume, reel and portfolio preparation; interview preparation and interviewing skills; employment etiquette and business practices; exploring career and other professional opportunities; and self-promotion
- Provide expertise in counseling and programming across all the majors of the college including design, animation, comics, illustration, computer arts, film and video, fine arts and photography; possessing a specialty in one or more of these fields is expected, though the majors may be split between two counselors
- Advise and supervise students who are enrolled in the Internship for Credit program, helping them identify internship opportunities and work towards their individual learning goals
- Manage all administrative aspects of the Internship-for-Credit program, including the application process, the development and maintenance of student, employer and department documents and procedures; timely submission of forms, data and grades to the registrar for enrollment and class completion; and outreach to students and employers to encourage participation in Internship-for-Credit program
- Develop weekly lessons for online internship course for students via the Canvas learning management platform
- Utilize Symplicity career services management system for most of the administrative aspects of the Internship-for-Credit program and monitor student progress
- Provide counseling support for students and recent alumni seeking grants, residencies, and other professional opportunities
- Initiate, develop, coordinate, and promote educational and recruitment programs, including career development workshops, guest speaker and panel events, on-campus and virtual portfolio reviews and recruitment visits, large-scale information sessions, and an annual College-wide career fair
- Support the director in reporting on internship and employment data and assessment of department services
- Conduct industry outreach across creative industries and connect students and alumni with internships and jobs, and Identify and cultivate prospective employers per specific majors
- Maintain productive working relationships with colleagues including but not limited to the International Student Office, Academic Advisors, department chairs and support staff, Registrar, Alumni Affairs & Development, Communication, SVA Library, and more
- Provide training and support to the coordinator role as needed
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in visual arts or career counseling, master’s preferred
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in college-level career counseling, college teaching and/or visual arts profession
- Professional level work and/or artistic experience in at least one of the undergraduate majors at SVA: design, animation, comics, illustration, computer arts, computer animation, visual effects, film and video, fine arts or photography
- Knowledge of and sensitivity to career aspirations of visual artists, as well as familiarity with career paths and resources available
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication/presentation skills
- Strong organizational and program management skills
- Ability to initiate and complete projects, attending to all details
- Computer literacy and facility with a range of online platforms: Google Drive, Microsoft Office required; social media marketing; HTML email marketing; content management systems, career services management systems (Symplicity, College Central)
