Position Summary

This position is eligible for a 60% remote/40% in-office flexible work option as outlined in NYSTRS’ Flexible Work Pilot Program.
Under the direction of the Risk Officer, the incumbent is responsible for the oversight and management of the day-to-day operations of the Investment Risk Department, developing and implementing department goals and objectives, and coaching and mentoring staff.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and seven years professional experience in any combination of the following: institutional investment risk or portfolio management; investment operations; enterprise risk management; investment compliance, auditing, or accounting; financial, quantitative or business analysis; or a related field;
7 years of qualified experience includes:
Working effectively as part of cross functional teams and to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships.
Advanced utilization of the MS Office Suite, especially Excel, including development of complex spreadsheets.
Utilization of various risk models for portfolio analysis including multi-factor investment and climate risk models.

An advanced degree in accounting, business administration, economics, finance, information services, mathematics, risk management, or related field of study substitutes for one (1) year of professional experience.
Successful completion of all three levels of the CFA exam; holding a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designation, a Financial Risk Manager (FRM), or a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation, substitutes for one (1) year of professional work experience.
A Maximum of one (1) year of experience substitution is permitted.

- Supervisory experience
- Facilitating meetings to discuss complex issues and developing action plans/mitigating strategies
- Developing, implementing, back-testing mathematical models
- Data management and application maintenance
- Knowledge of climate risk science
- Experience monitoring and reporting on regulatory requirements
- Proficiency with BarraOne or similar factor based multi-asset class investment risk system
- Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Financial Risk Manager (FRM) or similar designation
- Commitment to providing exceptional customer service
- Excellent communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills

Description
The duties of the Assistant Manager of Investment Risk will include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Contributes to the development of the department’s strategic plans in a management capacity.
- Ensure the quality and execution of NYSTRS investment risk management program including oversight of data collection and analysis, modeling, reporting, process development, documentation, and quality assurance, as well as the general and technical supervision and development of staff.
- Work with senior management to develop and enhance programs to address risks to NYSTRS’ investment portfolio including market, liquidity, and climate.
- Work with stakeholder departments to coordinate the development and maintenance of risk assessments and key risk indicators to help measure and monitor NYSTRS’ liquidity, market, and funding risks.
- Prepare, and as requested, present reports to NYSTRS’ Internal Investment Committee and Retirement Board.
