The University of Colorado School of Medicine Physical Therapy Program in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is home to multiple educational programs: the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program, Pediatric, Orthopedic, and Faculty Physical Therapy Residency Programs, and PhD Program in Rehabilitation Science. The CU Physical Therapy Program most recently was ranked within the Top 13 accredited physical therapy programs in the United States by the U.S. News and World Report and is one of the first 25 educational programs still in existence in the United States. Additionally, our clinical and research partners include the Rocky Mountain Regional Veterans Affairs Medical Center, University of Colorado Hospital, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Craig Hospital, and Colorado Clinical & Translational Sciences Institute.

In addition to the wide array of health-related programs and facilities offered at the Anschutz Medical Campus, a significant number of undergraduate and graduate degree programs are taught at our comprehensive campus in the heart of downtown Denver. Denver is one of America’s most vibrant urban centers and the downtown campus, located just steps from the Denver Center for Performing Arts and the LoDo District. The metropolitan area affords our students, faculty and staff access to a broad array of academic, professional, community, recreational and cultural outlets. This position is fulltime (1.0 FTE) with the majority of time allocated to direct the clinical education program in the residential and hybrid pathways along with teaching, service and scholarship responsibilities consistent with the mission and philosophy of the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program in the School of Medicine (SOM) at the University of Colorado, as well as accreditation standards as set forth by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). This position is at the academic rank of Assistant Professor within the School of Medicine. The qualified individual will have a strong desire to support and advance clinical education and to remain active in contemporary clinical practice and education research/scholarship.

This individual will be joining a dynamic faculty and clinical education team committed to excellence and innovation in clinical education and classroom/ laboratory instruction for both residential and hybrid pathways. The applicant will lead the clinical education program and team working closely with the Associate and Assistant Directors of Clinical Education in further development and implementation of clinical education program initiatives related to 1) enhancing strong academic and clinical partnerships; 2) implementing an interconnected and purposeful curriculum, and 3) fostering intentional culture of teaching and learning. The applicant will assume a primary leadership role in administering the clinical education program, responsible for future visioning and innovation, creating an effective clinical education team organization structure for residential and hybrid pathways, designing, and implementing partnership initiatives, mentoring faculty and staff, and teaching in areas of expertise. This position will report to the Program Directors in the residential and hybrid pathways.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and oversight of the clinical education program and team for residential and hybrid pathways
  • Guide strategic planning for clinical education program
  • Direct Clinical Education Advisory Board
  • Oversight of clinical education reports for Program, such as, CAPTE, ACAPT, Assessment Committee, etc.
  • Ensure compliance of clinical education policies, procedures, and processes
  • Clinical Education course coordination
  • Clinical Education student advising
  • Lead initiative to promote, improve, and maintain academic and clinical partnerships
  • Oversight of student remediation for clinical education courses
  • Timely communication with Program Directors, clinical partners, clinical education team members, faculty, and students
  • Working knowledge of the CUPT Curriculum including didactic courses and the timing, goals, and expectations for each clinical education experience
  • Proficiency in the use of the program’s clinical education database
  • Mentoring junior faculty and staff
  • Direct and indirect supervision of Clinical Education support staff
  • Representation on Program Leadership Group, Student Promotions, Admissions, and Assessment Committees and other committees and task forces as needed
  • Developing and implementing a scholarly agenda
  • Available to work onsite at Colorado Springs campus, frequency determined by Program Director of Hybrid Pathway and the Associate Dean of Physical Therapy Education
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Program Directors

Qualifications:


Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

  • A Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree or a lower-level physical therapy degree with a terminal degree (such as PhD, DSc, DHS, EdD, or equivalent)
  • A current PT license in the State of Colorado or eligibility for licensure in Colorado.
  • Prior experience as a Director, Associate, or Assistant Director of Clinical Education in a DPT Program
  • Minimum of 5 years prior experience working as a member of a clinical education team in the academic setting
  • Prior experience coordinating clinical education course/s / curriculum
  • Prior experience teaching in remote/virtual classroom environments
  • Prior leadership experience on committees and/or program development
  • Completion of Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program, Level 1
  • Minimum of 7 years of clinical experience as a licensed physical therapist
  • Clearly defined scholarly agenda with evidence of research/scholarship necessary for rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced academic degree in higher education with emphasis on administration, leadership, policy, or pedagogy relevant to physical therapy education (completed or in progress)
  • Previous teaching experience in academic setting (PT/PTA Program)
  • Prior leadership role/s in the CU PT or other PT/PTA Programs (e.g., served as course coordinator, chair of committee, class advisor, clinical instructor, or Site Coordinator of Clinical Education)
  • Prior experience leading teams and/or mentoring faculty/staff
  • Prior experience with strategic planning
  • Development and/or oversight of individual learning plans during clinical education experiences.
  • Experience with data management systems
  • Completion of Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program, Level 2
  • Participation in local, state, regional, or national clinical education activities (e.g., attendance or leadership role in Clinical Education Special Interest Group, attendance at Education Leadership Conference or Northwest Intermountain Consortium Conferences)
  • Evidence of commitment to CU PT Program and clinical education excellence
