Assistant Supervisor, HVAC Job at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools

Summary:
To supervise, organize, and participate in the HVAC activities; and to perform a variety of technical tasks including the installation, replacement, maintenance and repair of HVAC systems and equipment and to provide staff assistance to the HVAC Supervisor.

Direct impact on issues relating to operation and maintenance of HVAC systems in all schools and facilities of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools

Essential Duties:

  • Responds to Operational Emergencies related to HVAC systems, as required; troubleshoot issues to determine causes and implement solutions.
  • Recommends and assists in the implementation of departmental goals and objectives
  • Establishes schedules and methods for the HVAC maintenance staff
  • Implements policies and procedures
  • Plans, prioritizes, assigns, supervises and reviews the work of the HVAC staff
  • Evaluates operations and activities of HVAC system installation, maintenance and repair; then recommends improvements and modifications
  • Performs tests and maintains records for emergency backup systems
  • Acquires materials and inventory as needed to maintain production of the crew
  • Repairs HVAC deficiencies as noted by State and Local fire, safety, and insurance officials
  • Estimates cost of repairs (labor, materials); purchases materials/supplies; and maintains records involving time, labor, and materials
  • Performs the most complex HVAC duties. Installs, maintains, repairs, and replaces defective or worn parts in motors, generators, pumps, breaker panels, HVAC, and Energy Management Controls, switches and other facilities and equipment
  • Troubleshoots malfunctions and identifies plan of action to resolve problems
  • Assists in the training of staff
  • Instructs all employees in safe work practices
  • Assists in the Evaluation of HVAC Department Staff
  • Manages departmental materials, equipment, and supplies
  • Maintains records of work completed and costs associated with projects
  • Ability to identify problems with related Electrical, Plumbing, Energy Management Equipment, and collaborate with respective technicians in the repairs
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

Minimum

  • High School Diploma or GED with seven (7) years of experience
    - or -
    Diploma or Associates degree in HVAC technology / DDC control systems
  • Three (3) to Five (5) years of increasing responsible HVAC experience.
  • Two (2) years as a team leader and/or increasing responsibility as the lead man

Desirable

  • Graduate of trade school and/or accredited college with focus in HVAC
  • N.C. State Contractor's License with five (5) years of responsible HVAC experience
  • Three (3) to Five (5) years as a team leader and/or responsibility as the lead man

Licensing / Certification Requirements:

  • One or more of relevant specialty areas professional level NATE certification or the ability to obtain within 6 months of starting the position
  • Universal CFC certification
  • Possess a valid North Carolina Driver's license
