Position Description

The primary role of the Associate Director for Student Success will be to work with incoming first-year students and transfer students. This position will provide strategic and transformational leadership in the area of first-year academic advising to support freshmen and transfer students. This position will assist in coordinating and conducting focused academic advising and student support services to help students persevere in their program of study. The Associate Director for Student Success will assist in providing services which include student advisement, academic progress review, and development and coordination of retention efforts for new and continuing students. The Associate Director for Student Success assists in gathering statistical information and developing strategies to retain students. The Associate Director for Student Success is intended to aid in the early detection of students who are experiencing difficulties in class, being excessively absent from class, or facing other problems that may adversely impact academic performance.

Position Responsibilities

  • Assists in developing and maintaining a collaborative working relationship with the Office of Academic Affairs, Student Affairs department, faculty, and staff to facilitate advisement, academic progress review, and implement innovative retention programs and services for new, at-risk students
  • Assists in providing information on targeted career and educational pathways
  • Assists in coordinating and/or providing services to support academic persistence and success.
  • Assists in monitoring student attendance, performance, and academic progress
  • Assists in coordinating services with relevant college departments and community agencies
  • Assists in coordinating, tracking, reporting, and using retention data research and analysis to identify obstacles to student achievement and retention
  • Assists in designing, coordinating, and targeting new intervention services, programs, and initiatives focused on student retention and development
  • Assists in functioning as part of an early alert team to support college persistence and retention.
  • Participates in opportunities to increase and share knowledge about the role of the academic advising coordinator to improve counseling resources, strategies, and college policies and procedures
  • Participates as a member of the Student Success Team the Preliminary Response Team, the CARE Team, the Student Success (Retention) Team, and the Academic Support Team
  • Responsible for all duties as the Veteran’s Liaison Officer and VA School Certifying Official including but not limited to certifying all student veterans and/or students who have VA educational benefits
  • Coordinates all summer advising outreach to incoming first-year and transfer students including the development and implementation of materials to educate students about the institution and assist with the transition process
  • Provide summer and academic year advising for first-year and transfer students in concert with faculty advisors
  • Provide success coaching to students and student success programming and workshop sessions
  • Facilitate outreach to students for academic support (e.g. students on academic warning or students with mid-term deficiencies)
  • Participate in and co-facilitate recruit back efforts with non-registered and under-registered first-year students
  • Coordinate and co-facilitate First-Year Advising labs
  • Coordinate and co-facilitate campus-wide events for First-Year Advising Week
  • Performs other site and position-specific functions as assigned

Education Requirements

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required

Reporting Structure

The Associate Director for Student Success will report directly to the Director for Student Recruitment & Success
