General Statement of Duties: The Associate Director, New Student Advising Programs oversees the advising and registration of all new students. In addition, this individual will direct the advising and registration of specific cohorts of students. They must have the ability to work well with a diverse group of individuals and to be perceptive and understanding of student concerns. This position requires extreme sensitivity, the appropriate handling of confidential information, and a professional approach to all responsibilities as outlined below.

Responsibilities

  • (E) Direct the registration process and programming for all incoming first-year and transfer students.
  • (E) Supervise full-time and part-time Academic Advisors.
  • (E) Communicates with faculty on topics of course availability, program requirements, and advising topics specific to the department.
  • (E) Coordinate the development and implementation of all student communications, advising materials, student workshops, and faculty/advisor programs.
  • (E) Coordinate advising services, including undeclared, drop-in, and probation advising and conduct referrals and liaison activities with academic departments. Includes coordinating Group Advising workshops each semester.
  • (E) Develop and implement training for advisors. Includes training all WSU members across campus (Faculty and Staff) that will assist the ASC in large scale Advising Services. i.e. Undeclared Advising, Orientation, Transfer Advising and First-Year Registration events.
  • (E) Supervise the reinstatement and exit interview processes.
  • (E) Work with First Year Seminar Director and FYS instructors and Director of Retention to develop a cohesive structure as it related to retention efforts and measures.
  • (E) Maintain all records and assessment in relation to probation students, advisor training, student workshops, reinstatements, exit interviews, and drop-in advising.
  • (E) Serves as an academic advisor for first-year, undeclared, Liberal Studies, and probation students.
  • (E) Provides evening and weekend coverage, as assigned.
  • (E) Coordinate with orientation programs, open houses, Congratulations Day, first-year student registration programs, and transfer advising.
  • (E) Works collaboratively with departments across campus including academic and student support services. Provides referrals when necessary and advocates for students' success when needed.
  • (E) Assists in recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising all student staff and non-professional staff in the Academic Success Center.
  • (E) Maintains working knowledge of computer systems including Self-Service, Image Now, Colleague, Accuplacer, Starfish, Transfer Equivalency System (TES).
  • (E) Demonstrates civility and professional, customer-service oriented behavior, worthy of emulation by other staff and students.
  • (E) Responsible for contributing to the WSU Strategic Plan.
  • (E) Responsible for contributing to Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action objectives.

Job Requirements:


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in appropriate field.
  • Three years related work experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and respectfully with students, families, faculty, staff, and administration.
  • Ability to work collegially with all offices across campus.
  • Must have an appreciation for the value of a liberal education, an understanding of faculty roles and culture, and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, presentation, listening, and counseling skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively and professionally with a very diverse group of faculty, students, staff, and university personnel
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends, as assigned, for purposes of office coverage and event coverage.
  • Ability to pass a thorough background check and CORI check.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree.
  • Experience with supervision in an academic setting.

Additional Information:


This is a full-time, benefited, exempt, professional APA position. The firm starting annual salary range for this position is $70,000 - $75,000, commensurate with relevant professional experience and education.
