This position will be based at the Pacific Aquaculture and Coastal Resources Center (PACRC) at the University of Hawaii Hilo and is intended to strengthen the teaching and research capacity of the PACRC primarily in the area of marine fish aquaculture, although other areas of aquaculture may be included.

Duties and Responsibilities

This position reports to the Dean of the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resource Management (CAFNRM), however the candidate will be expected to work closely with and under the guidance of the Principal Investigator of the Coral Reef Fish Breeding and Research Program.

  • Co-manage the Coral Reef Fish Research and Breeding Program at the Pacific Aquaculture and Coastal Resources Center (PACRC) at the University of Hawaii Hilo with the goal of developing hatchery production and aquaculture methods for Hawaiian species of marine ornamental and food fishes, and other aquaculture organisms.
  • Teach at least one undergraduate or graduate course in aquaculture annually, provide academic advising and assist with the PACRC Aquaculture Workforce Training Program for students and assist the Professor of Aquaculture ((#73318) with one additional course per year.
  • Conduct outreach and extension in Hawai?i and the U.S. Affiliate Pacific Islands for aquaculture.
  • Build collaborative research and training partnerships for commercial, culture-based and restorative aquaculture.
  • Assist with fund raising for the PACRC and the Coral Reef Fish Research and Breeding Program.
  • Develop animal care protocols, oversee applicable State and Federal permit applications and similar tasks required to maintain compliance with research compliance requirements.
  • May be called upon for other university-related duties.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Aquaculture, Marine Science or closely related discipline.
  • Must presently or have held the rank of Assistant Professor or higher, or be able to demonstrate having held an equivalent position in one of these disciplines at an accredited baccalaureate degree-granting institution.
  • Interdisciplinary professional experience leading research on fish aquaculture, live feeds production (i.e. zooplankton, phytoplankton).
  • Ability to develop and teach courses on aquaculture, water quality, aquaculture engineering and related.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach high quality hands-on laboratory-based course.
  • Demonstrated track record of inclusion of students in a significant way in research and extension.
  • Record of peer-reviewed publication in the field of aquaculture warranting the rank of associate professor.
  • Demonstrated record of competitive grant awards.


Desirable Qualifications


  • Demonstrated ability to advise undergraduates and graduate students.
  • Ability to train students and community members in aquaculture methods or demonstrated extension experience.
  • Evidence of having successfully produced marine fish and live feeds on a semi-commercial level.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach, train and conduct extension in multicultural settings in the Pacific Islands.
  • Hands-on experience with fish aquaculture in traditional Hawaiian fishponds (loko i?a).
  • Ability to handle complex aspects of research program administration, procurement, recruitment, budgeting, proposal writing and supervision of program operations.
  • Ability to manage, design, repair and maintain large aquaculture research support infrastructure.
  • Experience with research compliance requirements such as State and Federal permits and Institutional Animal Care and Utilization Committee (IAUCUC) requirements.
  • Ability to travel and work in remote, hot and humid locations for long periods of time.
