The Assistant Director of Youth Leadership and Engagement is responsible for upholding an agency-wide vision of youth development, and for collaborating with other key staff to develop practices and behaviors that support this vision. The Assistant Director will oversee the operations of the agency’s community spaces and its recreational activities and will work with staff to develop and implement a collection of youth leadership opportunities at The Door, including the agency’s Youth Councils. The Assistant Director of Youth Leadership and Engagement will also work alongside agency management to develop and implement responsive and appropriate community programming. This individual will collaborate with program staff to encourage opportunities for youth engagement and leadership and facilitate youth representation in decision-making bodies. The Assistant Director of Youth Leadership and Engagement will play a lead role in planning and implementing agency-wide events and initiatives. Additionally, this individual will collaborate with agency management to ensure that youth development, behavior management, and other agency practices are implemented consistently and appropriately agency-wide. The Assistant Director of Youth Leadership and Engagement will assist in the oversight of The Door’s Behavior Management Team and will serve, as a Manager-On-Duty, orchestrating response to emergent needs. The Assistant Director of Youth Leadership and Engagement will also work collaboratively with other program staff to ensure the existence of a positive, safe, and supportive environment for all members and staff
Responsibilities:
- Oversee staff and operations of The Door’s Youth Council
- Collaborate with the managers for all Youth Leadership programs (Arts, BYC, Peers, and Wellness) to implement programming for the community
- Coordinate and implement general programming in community spaces, including daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly schedules
- Collaborate with program staff agency-wide to engage young people and create dynamic, creative, and responsive spaces and activities
- Oversee activities and engagement staff and overall operations of communal spaces
- Serve as Manager-on-Duty from 12pm-6pm. Ensure consistent response to emergent needs and maintaining appropriate documentation
- Using a restorative justice and positive youth development frameworks, work with a small team to provide oversight of the Behavior Management Team (BMT) to ensure consistent and timely responses to crisis in alignment with our model and principles, and progressive and effective behavior management practices for vulnerable youth
- Assist in the creation of collaborative programming and events that that works to foster a sense of community and social/emotional support (Fall Kick-Off, Giving Thanks, Ally Week)
- Develop and engage internal and external partnerships that will foster project-based learning and other opportunities for Youth Council
- Maintain all agency data collection and reporting requirements
- Participate in agency-wide and department staff meetings monthly, as well as all scheduled team meetings
- Contribute as part of the larger Door management team, supporting policies and procedures and the achievement of our strategic initiatives
- Complete any additional responsibilities and functions as assigned by supervisor
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in social work or related field preferred or significant experience in a related role (e.g., 5-plus years in youth development or social services)
- Excellent organizational and creative skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Experience working with LGBTQ-identified, runaway and/or homeless, foster care and immigrant youth populations preferred
- Excellent working knowledge of youth arts and recreation programming
- Knowledgeable of and able to apply positive youth development principles to working with young people
- Ability to provide crisis management and crisis intervention
- Understanding of adolescent development, assessment, counseling and/or crisis management
- Ability to work effectively and creatively as part of an interdisciplinary team
- Proficiency in Spanish, French, or Mandarin is a plus
