GSA delivers a host of logistical support services to County agencies and partners from maintenance of facilities and County fleet to energy and environmental management services, capital project management, procurement services, and clean commute and recycling programs. THE POSITION
Under general supervision, to provide preventive maintenance and to diagnose mechanical failure in passenger vehicles, vans, light-duty trucks (up to 1-ton rating) and motorcycles; to complete major overhauling and repair work; to design and install special equipment in vehicles; to conduct comprehensive vehicle inspections ensuring that vehicles are in safe working condition; and to do related work as required.

SALARY

$44.09/hour; $91,707.20/year

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Training:

Completion of an accredited apprenticeship in the auto mechanics trade, or an AA degree in Automotive Technology.

AND

Experience:

The equivalent of three years of journey-level experience in the maintenance and repair of passenger vehicles vans or light-duty trucks, including brakes, suspension, steering systems, and electricals/electronics, in an independent shop, dealership, or fleet experience.

License:

Possess and maintain a valid California Motor Vehicle Class C Driver’s License. Candidates must submit evidence from the DMV showing current status of their license at the time of application and must have a clean driving record for the previous three-year period.

Certification:

For Public Works Agency, all certifications below are required upon submittal of an application.

For General Services Agency positions only A6, A8, L1, and State of California Smog Inspectors License certifications are required.

A5 Brakes
A6-Electrical/Electronic Systems
A7 Heating and Air Conditioning
A8-Engine Performance
L1-Advanced Engine Performance Specialist State of California Smog Inspectors License
State of California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) Training may substitute as follows:

Electrical/Electronic Systems Training may substitute for A6-Electrical/Electronic Systems
Engine Performance Systems Training may substitute for A8-Engine Performance
Advanced Engine Performance/Emission Systems Training may substitute for L1-Advanced Engine Performance Specialist

The following ASE certifications are desirable:

A2 Automatic Transmission
A9 Light Vehicle Diesel Engines
Special Requirements:

Auto Mechanics must provide their own hand tools.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies:

Knowledge of:

Current automotive industry maintenance and repair standards.
Basic safety practices and procedures including the use of safety equipment and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Methods, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of passenger vehicles, vans, light-duty trucks and motorcycles.
Late model automobile engines, including ignition, electrical, emission control and electronic or computerized systems.
Fuel, oil, and water pumps.
Differentials and drive systems.
Clutch, braking and suspension systems.
All other major functioning parts of automobiles, vans, light-duty trucks and motorcycles.
Operation and repair of automatic and standard transmissions.
Emission control system and testing devices.
On-board computer diagnostic equipment.

Ability to:

Use tools and equipment skillfully and safely in making complex automotive repairs.
Gather and analyze any needed information to diagnose causes of mechanical and electrical failure in passenger vehicles, vans, light-duty trucks and motorcycles.
Design and fabricate special installations.
Read and understand manufacturers’ specification and repair manuals, including those produced on electronic media (CD ROM’s, DVD’s or internet).
Follow written and oral instructions.
Operate computer programs and utilize technology.
Use fleet management systems and online repair manuals.
Use current smog testing equipment.
Perform work safely.
Operate a tow truck.
Work collaboratively.
Provide excellent customer service.
