Summary Description

The Hut Naturalist is a unique position, which is responsible for both leading the environmental education and research efforts of a backcountry hiking lodge and contributing to the operation of the hut as a full-service, overnight facility for guests.

As the educational leader of the hut, the Naturalist is responsible for connecting visitors with the environmental resources and history of the land surrounding their hut. This goal is primarily fulfilled through the researching, developing, and leading of on-site interpretive programs for hut guests and visitors. Daily responsibilities also include advertising programs, keeping records, and broadly fueling visitors’ curiosities. The Naturalist will also conduct ongoing plant phenology data collection to support AMC research investigating the ecological impacts of climate change. Environmental education and experience is strongly preferred. Trainings on local ecology, interpretive program development, and plant phenology research will be provided to Naturalists before the season begins. As part of hut crew, the Hut Naturalist also performs regular hut operational duties - including packing food to the hut, cleaning, assisting with morning and evening meal service, and occasionally leading meal preparation – alongside the rest of the hut crew. All hut positions require excellent guest service skills, backcountry experience, and a commitment to the goals of AMC. Applicants should be able to carry 40 pounds or more over rugged terrain. The standard work schedule is 11 days at the hut and 3 days off.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Present daily local natural and cultural history programs for guests and visitors.
  • Develop and maintain program materials and daily records of program offerings.
  • Collect phenological data on local plant species twice per week
  • Function as an education resource for guests and visitors
  • Provide a positive hut experience for all day and overnight guests.
  • Assist the Hut Crew with the preparation and execution of breakfast and dinner service for as many as 36 to 96 guests. (Guest counts vary by hut placement and date)
  • Occasionally serve as the lead cook for breakfast and dinner service
  • Hike food and supplies to the hut (40 pounds or more for 1.5 - 5 miles) twice a week
  • Greet, register, and assist overnight guests
  • Answer questions, provide information, give trail advice, and sell supplies to guests and visitors at the hut information desk
  • Handle transactions of retail items and basic backcountry supplies, occasionally executing basic accounting of hut income
  • Clean public spaces, sleeping quarters, and bathrooms daily.
  • Maintain and uphold all COVID-related safety and cleaning measures implemented by the AMC
  • Voluntarily participate in search and rescue operations.

What we’re looking for:

  • Due to hours worked, applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Professional cooking and food service experience is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to live and work closely within a small community of 4-10 coworkers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and kindly is vital
  • Friendly, outgoing manner and commitment to positive guest service.
  • Backcountry travel experience, or at least comfort not having immediate access to internet, cell coverage and roadside amenities.
  • Knowledge of the White Mountains and/or Leave-No-Trace principles, desirable but not necessary.
  • Wilderness medical certification and CPR certification (Wilderness First Aid, Wilderness First Responder, etc.), preferable.

Compensation and benefits:

  • Salary Range: $10.00-$11.00/ hour
  • Onsite housing + meals provided
  • Free use of AMC Destinations: 4 nights per year
  • Free annual AMC membership
  • Health Plan with Optional Vision + Dental Insurance when working 30+ hours per week for 6+ months
