Alvarado Parkway Institute (API) is San Diego's leading provider of comprehensive mental health and substance abuse care. As a part of our Behavioral Healthcare system, API operates a free-standing 66 bed psychiatric hospital in La Mesa, California with four Intensive Outpatient/Partial Hospitalization Programs. These programs emphasize symptom management, community integration, and prevention of hospitalization or re-hospitalization.

The Clinical Care Specialist works in conjunction with members of the API multi-disciplinary team(s) to provide clinical assessment and triage services to adult clients in the community who are seeking behavioral health services. The Clinical Care Specialist will provide quality patient care and excellent customer service to clients and their families through education, referrals, connections with services, follow up, and advocacy. Additionally, the Clinical Care Specialist is a part of the Business Development team and works to educate others about the API continuum of care. The Clinical Care Specialist serves as a role model to others exemplifying the hospital’s mission, values, and guiding principles.
Essential Functions:

- Responds promptly to requests for assessments within 24 hours of the initial call.
- Completes thorough, timely, and accurate assessments and documents in the patient’s electronic health record. Communicates findings to the multi-disciplinary treatment team.
- Responds to requests for follow up visits which are more complex and require a higher-level review and intervention.
- Reviews all proposed admissions with the Program Director for approval and to ensure good communication between team members.
- Communicates well with physicians in making referrals, accepting referrals, discussing clinical treatment needs of patients, and ensuring that patients have a smooth transition to treatment.
- As a member of the Business Development team, the Clinical Care Specialist works with Marketing Associate to schedule community events, round table discussions, serving on committees, lead behavioral healthcare community discussions on behalf of API, helping to establish the organization as a resource for great mental health and substance use disorder treatment and programs.
- Provides data and information on existing programs as well as developing program curriculum that is supported by community needs assessments.
- Obtains collateral data prior to admission including the completion of release of information forms, insurance verification checks, and the gathering of medical records to support the patient’s smooth entry into the API healthcare system.
- Operates independently, manages time well, analyzes work; can problem solve, set goals and execute a course of action using sound decision making skills.
- Demonstrates teamwork, motivates others, and holds others accountable.
- Assists in collecting/analyzing/aggregating data related to patient outcomes/ program operations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
- Master’s degree in a behavioral health science.
- Current licensure with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification
- Experience working with adults who suffer from mental illness or substance use disorders.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Certification as a Clinical Supervisor for LCSW and MFT
- Training as a Clinical Trauma Professional, DBT, CBT, ACT, Individual psychotherapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing.
- Fluency in database management; Excel and Access; familiarity with electronic health record systems.

Background/Reference Check & Licensure/Certification:
- Completion of a satisfactory background and reference checks.
- Employee signed employment non-compete/confidentiality agreement
- Individuals whose position may require licensure, registration or certification must maintain such as current and valid. It is the employee's responsibility to send updated copies to Human Resources before the expiration date. It is the employee's responsibility to notify Human Resources of any changes or proposed changes in status to licensure, registration, or certification. Failure to do so could result in employee suspension.
Covid-19 and Flu Vaccinations; Medical:
- Provide a copy of COVID-19 Vaccination OR have Exemption Request (Deferred Pregnancy, Medical, or Religious) approved by the API HR Director; and those who have an approved Exemption must undergo weekly COVID-19 testing and observe all other infection control requirements, including face coverings.
- Annual Flu vaccination is required as a condition of hire and ongoing employment. Only those who are allergic to the vaccine or meet contraindications as indicated on the current CDC Vaccine Information Statement shall be exempt from this condition of hire and ongoing employment but are required to wear a mask while inside an APIU owned or operated building or vehicle during influenza season, Employees must provide physician documentation to support any reported allergy or contraindication. Flu season typically runs between November and March.
- Pass drug and alcohol test
- Clear TB skin test or Chest X-Ray at East County Urgent Care
- Complete a satisfactory physical examination at East County Urgent Care designed solely to determine your ability to perform the duties of the position being offered.
Covid-19 Booster:
Effective January 7, 2022, in accordance with CDPH Public Health Orders, all healthcare workers (HCW), including Medical Staff who are booster-eligible, must be boosted or provide an Approved Exemption by February 1, 2022. Employees who are not yet booster-eligible and/or have an Approved Exemption must begin testing weekly through API’s Covid-19 Testing Clinic.
