Under the guidance of the Nutritionist Supervisor Senior, the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor works individually with pregnant, breastfeeding women and infants, promotes breastfeeding to pregnant women and provides encouragement to breastfeeding women and their infants, participates and facilitates breastfeeding classes; maintaining client confidentiality of all patient information; scheduling return appointments, and other duties as assigned.
NOTE : This is a P-14 wage position. Wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average (1500 hours total) over the course of twelve months (each May 1 through April 30 of the following year). The provisions of the Virginia Personnel Act do not cover wage employees; therefore, they are not eligible for state benefits or access to the grievance procedure. Minimum Qualifications
A valid State Driver’s License is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency. Excellent computer skills including experience with Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, etc. Must have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Applicant must have successfully breastfed one or more infants for at least six months or more. Must have experience working with diverse populations. Must have the ability to work with individuals, families, and groups.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge and/or Experience with the WIC Program. Breastfeeding knowledge. Knowledge of the nutritional needs of pregnant, breastfeeding women and infants. Ability to speak a language other than English. Routine patient education experience. Community outreach experience is preferred. Experience in a fast-paced office environment. High school graduate or equivalent.
Special Requirements
May require occasional overnight travel or extended work hours to meet agency needs.
Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a state and federal criminal history background check and the Department of Social Service’s Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check, U.S. HHS IG Exclusion List check, employment reference check and E-Verify. Other financial, credit, driving, or other background checks prior to employment may be required for certain positions. Completion of Statement of Economic Interests will be required upon employment.
VDH requires all Health-Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation of immunization or evidence of immunity to the following: hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella; a one-time dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last dose of tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine was administered (Td or Tdap boosters shall be received every 10 years); and the current year’s seasonal influenza vaccination.
