Building/Grounds Maintenance Worker-Seasonal Job at City of Durango

Performs a variety of general building, facility, and ground maintenance duties to efficiently operate water treatment facilities and maintain them in proper repair, clean and safe manner. Assists certified treatment operators by ensuring that all projects are completed correctly, efficiently, and on time to maintain schedules for all tasks. This position reports directly to the Water Treatment Superintendent.
Employment Terms:
Seasonal employment, up to 6 months, typically May – November, up to 40 hours per week, no benefits.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Operate mowers, skid steer, and weed eaters.
2. Apply pesticides, herbicides, fertilizer product to enhance growth and eliminate noxious weeds on the property. Maintain a healthy tree and shrub population.
3. Maintain, test, and repair grounds irrigation system.
4. Preparatory work and painting of rooms, equipment, piping, and structures.
5. Perform cleaning and janitorial duties.
6. Assist with plumbing work; repairs as needed to keep all plumbing in optimum working order.
7. Perform carpentry work in repairing facilities.
8. Runs errands as required; deliver/pick-up equipment, tools, and materials.
9. Assist in the maintenance and repair of all equipment.
10. Assist in determining best practice methods for any/all w projects.
11. Ensure availability of tools, equipment, and materials to effectively carry out job responsibilities.
12. Communicate all critical information regarding operational status of the facilities with the WTP Superintendent to ensure that all grounds and facilities meet function and appearance standards.
13. Perform other related duties as required.

Job Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skill, and Ability
Knowledge of:
Practices, methods, tools, materials and equipment of the building trades. Use of methods, equipment, and procedures of cleaning materials. Occupational hazards of building trades and safety precautions. Basic plumbing and electrical. Basic landscaping principles and practices. Procedures, policies and operations within area of assignment.
Skill in:
Identifying and correcting defects in facilities and equipment. Operating and maintaining all assigned equipment. Effective oral communication. Mental and physical abilities. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and so forth. Following direction of supervision.
Mental abilities:
Ability to display sound judgment in analyzing situations and making decisions, and adopt quick and reasonable courses of action in stressful situations.
Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to understand and interpret documents such as safety rules operation and maintenance instructions, procedures and manuals.
Skill in use of equipment:
Mowing equipment, spray equipment, paint equipment and practices.
Work Environment:
While performing designated tasks, the employee is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions, work in high places (top of storage tanks), fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, confined spaces, and risk of electrical shock. Working conditions are sometime loud. Appropriate PPE will be required.
Physical Activities:
While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, speak / hear, and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Education or Formal Training and Licenses:
High School diploma or GED
Valid State Driver’s License
Experience:
Documentation of the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
