The Wichita Symphony is searching for an experienced Business Manager who seeks part-time work in a leading non-profit cultural setting that has provided Wichita and the surrounding area with music performances by a professional symphony orchestra since 1945. The Wichita Symphony produces classical concerts, pops, and an extensive educational program. A small staff manages the organization, and a Board of Directors oversees and guides the senior management. The Symphony musicians are professional, hired, and paid according to a Collective Bargaining Agreement. A Music Director is responsible for the artistic direction and quality of the orchestra.
The position becomes open on May 2.
The Symphony outsources Controller and audit duties, and the Business Manager will work closely with these individuals.
The Symphony’s financial management system uses QuickBooks Online, and the Box Office operates on Patron Manager, a database system utilizing a Salesforce.com platform.
The Business Manager manages and coordinates all accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting activities, such as the preparation of monthly financial statements by the Controller. S/he handles daily cash flow and manages banking, insurance, and auditing processes. S/he oversees the preparation of budgets, cash flow projections, and compliance filings. The Business Manager supports Box Office staff during peak times and at concerts. S/he reports to the Chief Executive Officer, interacts with various internal departments on accounting and budget issues, and interacts with the Board of Directors and committees as needed.
This position requires an excellent accounting background, good working knowledge of Quickbooks and Excel, and the ability to work with internal and external contacts.
Hours and Wage Expectations: The position is part-time, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Some flexibility for hours is allowed, and weekend hours are required at concerts to support the Symphony Box Office. Average weekly hours are about twenty-five, ranging to thirty at the busiest times. The hourly wage is approximately $20/hr.
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration is preferred. An Associate’s degree is acceptable if the experience level is sufficient. A minimum of three years of experience is preferred. Background in office management, information systems, computers, and experience in a non-profit setting will be assets for a successful candidate.

- Ability to multitask, problem-solve, and meet deadlines.
- S/he must have a sense of humor and be a team player in a small office setting. A love of classical music is an additional asset.
