Canine Kennel Assistant Job at Virginia Div of Institutions
Reporting to the Canine Detection Unit, this wage position provides K-9 Kennel support for the unit’s canines. This position will be based out of Canine Detection Unit located in
VADOC
Headquarters in Richmond, Virginia.
This position supports the organizational objective to enhance public safety of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia, the Virginia Department of Corrections’ staff, and inmates by meeting the organizational goals and the canine program mission.
This hourly arrangement provides daily canine kennel supervision and support to the canine operations staff through the daily operations of the kennel and care of the animals kept under the supervisor. Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of kennels and associated buildings and structures and ensures that they are in good repair. Oversees the overall health and safety of the canines kept in kennels to ensure that they are cared for properly.
This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12 month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of the hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This wage position offers no state benefits.

Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent. Valid Driver’s License. Demonstrated ability to work all shifts as assigned. Demonstrated skill as a canine kennel supervision. Demonstrated ability to supervise personnel, clean, handle and care for canines. Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend workplace policies and procedures and to prepare workplace reports and documentation using a computer.
The selected candidate must have the willingness and physical ability to work inside a kennel environment and work all shifts as assigned. Ability to organize, plan, schedule, and implement detailed and complex kennel assignments. Ability to work effectively with the general public, staff, inmates and other law enforcement agencies. Demonstrated ability to maintain composure in stressful situations, make responsible, honest, fair impartial, ethical and consistent decisions.

Preferred Qualifications
Prefer considerable experience working with canines. Prefer formal experience or education in caring for canines. Prefer supervisory or leadership skills / experience. Working knowledge of Virginia Department of Corrections practices, policies and procedures beneficial.
