Cataloguer (3 years fixed term), Painting and Sculpture Job at The Museum of Modern Art
The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for a Cataloguer in the Department of Painting and Sculpture. Reporting to the Collection Specialist, the Cataloguer assists with the examination, research and cataloging of the Museum’s collection of painting and sculpture. Assists with processing new acquisitions and readying information on collection works for display, internal and external loans, and publications. Enters information into The Museum System (TMS) for Museum records, updating when changes occur. This is a three-year grant funded, fixed term position.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Catalogs the Museum’s painting and sculpture collection with the Collection Specialist and answers related inquiries.
- Prepares collection-related documents: catalogue sheets, artist and object questionnaires, non-exclusive licenses, exhibition histories, framing orders, etc.
- Maintains routine collection data, records, and files, including artist and object questionnaires, non-exclusive licenses, caption approvals, exhibition histories, correspondence, and other Museum-wide collection initiatives.
- Helps to maintain and update object files for works in the collection.
- Responds to inquiries about collection works from both internal colleagues (other curatorial departments, Publications, Imaging, Conservation, Learning and Engagement, etc.) and external parties (catalogues raisonnés, artist studios, foundations, estates, peer institutions).
- Researches artists and collection objects.
- Assists Collection Specialist with the coordination of collection photography and imaging requests, as needed.
- Assists Collection Specialist with scheduling and setting up viewings and visitors to Study Center, including vetting files for outside researchers, as needed.
- Performs routine administrative duties in support of Department’s initiatives.
- Keeps informed of current activity in the area of departmental interest through gallery and museum visits, publications, etc.
- Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in art history. General knowledge of modern and contemporary art and familiarity with painting and sculpture techniques.
- Prior experience cataloging works of art required.
- Strong organization skills.
- General office experience preferred.
- Detail-oriented and well-organized.
- Knowledge of TMS.
- Strong research and communication skills (written and oral).
- Accurate data entry.
- Ability to collaborate, work as a team, and balance concurrent short- and long-term projects.
- Fully vaccinated with a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and/or the World Health Organization authorized vaccine (or approved for an exemption as a reasonable accommodation due to a qualified disability or sincerely held religious belief or other legal basis).
Salary Range: Minimum of $49,075 to a maximum of $58,000 per annum.
