ORGANIZATION SUMMARY
The LA Conservation Corps is an environmentally focused workforce development non-profit organization. We transform the lives of out-of-work and/or out-of-school young adults, whom we call Corpsmembers, who have faced internal and external challenges and have experienced systemic racial barriers. Work projects benefiting the environment and the community provide on-the-job training and experience portion of our program. The education we provide opens doors for future opportunities. Comprehensive supportive services remove barriers to participation and encourage success. And transition assistance connects Corpsmembers with careers and college. To date, more than 30,000 young people have participated in the Corps’ programs, learning new skills while contributing to the quality of life for all of us in the greater Los Angeles area.
POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Development Officer (CDO) is a key contributor to the organization’s success and sustainability. The CDO will establish new and maintain current development resources that will identify and cultivate funding to sustain and grow the organization. The Corps currently raises approximately $1.5M annually in philanthropic funds and receives between $5-10M in grants that the Development Department writes or assists in securing.
The CDO’s primary responsibility is to solicit private revenue from individuals, corporations, foundations and to manage fundraising from special events. The CDO develops the Corps’ marketing strategy and oversees the Corps’ public relations efforts. As a member of the Executive Management Team, the CDO works in partnership with senior leadership as the organizational expert on all fundraising, development, marketing, and public relations activities. This position currently supervises a Sr. Grant Writer and a Development Coordinator and there are plans to add an additional member to the team.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Organizational Strategy & Leadership
- Collaborate with the Executive Management Team and Development & Marketing Committee of the Board in developing the Development & Marketing vision for the future and participating in strategic planning while speaking through the lens of a fundraising and communications expert.
- Serve as a member of the Executive Management Team, acting as a spokesperson for the agency at community events and partnership meetings and to the media.
- Work with the Chief Executive Officer, Board of Directors and Executive Management Team to assess institutional needs and priorities in the areas of fundraising and communications.
- Assist Board Members and other key volunteers to fulfill their responsibilities as it relates to Development.
- Act as a liaison to the Development & Marketing Committee of the Board.
Development Team Leadership
- Design and lead the implementation of annual and long-term fund development plans to secure gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
- Develop comprehensive strategies to increase private philanthropy and fundraising for unrestricted donations for the organization as well as for donations that will fund the supportive services and education provided to program participants (“Corpsmembers”) and other restricted projects.
- Establish revenue goals, acquiring new sources of funding and conducting face-to-face meetings with current and prospective donors.
- Develop the protocol for data management in Salesforce (donor database) that ensures data integrity over time.
- Supervise staff responsible for donor database to effectively monitor prospect relations, track all donations, ensure accurate gift valuation and accounting, and acknowledge all contributions on a timely basis.
- Create and oversee departmental and event budgets.
Donor Stewardship & Event Management
- Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward potential individual, foundation and corporate donors capable of giving $10,000 and more over time.
- Organize donor campaigns and service projects with corporate partners and other stakeholders with the aim of developing a stewardship program that will create deeper ties with donors including volunteer recruitment for special projects
- Research in-kind funding resources and establish and steward new partnerships.
- Lead the planning and implementation of all special events-in-person and virtual-ensuring that goals for fundraising, attendance, marketing, and programming are met and kept within budget. This includes the Corps’ signature annual event, a 500-person luncheon, raising between $500,000-$1M.
Marketing & Communications
- Develop and execute annual Development & Marketing Plans.
- Plan and design year-end and other annual email and social media appeals.
- Research, cultivate and execute unique cause marketing opportunities.
- Establish vision and goals for annual communications calendar.
- Write, edit and/or gather content for regular email newsletters, social media posts, annual reports, marketing collateral, website, special reports, speeches, and presentations.
- Establish Corps’ storytelling principles and fundraising ethics. Work with staff and Corpsmembers to generate content that creates authentic donor connections and supports employee and Corpsmember pride and morale.
- Ensure quality control for all forms of external communications including crisis communications including collaborating with CEO and Administrative Officer on internal and external messaging.
Grants Management
- Oversee a robust grants management program, with the support of Department staff, Compliance and Corps Directors, ensuring applications and reports for unrestricted and restricted program grants are submitted on time and meet all necessary requirements.
- Oversee Sr. Grant Writer collaborations with Deputy Director of Operations and Corps Directors on government grant writing.
- Research grants and oversee the preparation and writing of proposals.
- Write grant proposals, applications and letters to corporate, foundation and government funders, as needed.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to use interpersonal skills to build strong relationships with potential funders, Board Members, and internal and external stakeholders.
- Comprehensive staff management skills, including experience building, mentoring and coaching a team of high-performing professionals, with a commitment to the continuous education and training of the Development Team.
- In-depth and current knowledge of fundraising practices and procedures, with a strong understanding of donor management systems.
- Experience in producing successful and meaningful special events.
- Demonstrate sensitivity, understanding and the ability to effectively interact with individuals (internal and external) from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, disability and ethnic backgrounds.
- Ability to explain policies, procedures and directions and represent the Corps’ philosophy and values to a wide range of audiences including Corpsmembers, programmatic staff, management and the public.
- Outstanding written and oral communications skills with a passion for the Corps and ability to articulate its mission.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- A Bachelor’s degree (from an accredited institution) in business, philanthropy, marketing and communications, or related field and experience required.
- A minimum of 7 years of experience in fund development, marketing, and public relations experience, required.
- A minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience.
- Master’s degree (from an accredited institution) in a related field, preferred.
- Previous experience working in a non-profit organization, preferred.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Must be COVID-19 vaccinated and be able to provide supporting documentation.
- Pass a post-offer drug/alcohol screen test before commencing employment (required to submit for the drug/alcohol screening at a company designated facility).
- Pass a post-offer Live Scan (fingerprint/background clearance-Department of Justice) before commencing employment.
- Reference checks will be conducted; employment is contingent upon receipt of acceptable references.
- Attend events and meetings in the community to support the program. This can involve working Saturdays or Sundays, as needed.
- Occasional use of private vehicle for company purposes; validation of driving record and approval of commercial policy insurability is required in conjunction with proof of personal minimum liability insurance coverage per the requirements of the State of California. Mileage will be reimbursed at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) standard mileage rate.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
- Salary $127,851- $176,957 annually. A starting salary higher than $127,851 per year is based on a level of experience and education that significantly exceeds the minimum requirements and is commensurate with the compensation scale (annual salary range).

- Three (3) weeks of vacation accrued per year; 11 paid Holidays and 80 hours of sick time accrued per year.
