Chief Philanthropy Officer Job at YMCA of Greater San Antonio
The Chief Philanthropy Officer (CPO) is directly responsible for the strategic planning, implementation, management, and oversight of all philanthropic giving, fundraising, and donor relations activities on behalf of the YMCA of Greater San Antonio. The CPO establishes and implements fundraising strategies and tactics to advance the Y’s mission through the annual giving campaign, capital campaigns, planned giving, government and foundation grants, and special events. This position is instrumental in developing and maintaining strong relationships with community, business, and government leaders. The Chief Philanthropy Officer reports to the President & CEO and serves as a member of the senior strategy team to advance strategic priorities of YMCA of Greater San Antonio. As part of the leadership team, the CPO collaborates with fellow senior leaders to strategize and report progress to the Board of Directors and lead donors.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Strategic Planning & Implementation
- Develops fundraising strategies, directs, and coordinates the annual fundraising campaign, major donor cultivation, capital development, and endowment programs.
- Develops measurements and outcome reports for YMCA programs that demonstrate the Y’s positive impact on the community.
- Builds and manages relationships, cultivates, and solicits major gifts from constituents including community members, individuals, and families.
- Oversees all fundraising activities including annual and major gifts, fundraising events, as well as campaigns during planning, silent and public stages of philanthropic initiatives.
- Serves as primary executive staff to the Annual Campaign Committee, and other committees of the Boards as assigned.
- Leads the work of Marketing/Communications on production of all major philanthropic publications, focusing on relevant campaigns and top-tier relationships.
- Develops strategies to increase volunteer involvement at all levels of financial development.
- Develops communication plans to ensure members, participants and the community understand the Y’s impact on the community and the case for support.
- Serves as a member of YMCA Senior Strategy Team and supports the overall objectives of the YMCA
- Meets with government and community leaders on a regular basis to build relationships and advocate for the Y.
- Develops, monitors, and manages the Philanthropy/Financial Development department budget.
Philanthropy/Development
- Works with the CEO, COO, and Board Members to develop and implement a comprehensive multi-year development strategy that includes retention and growth of each type of funding stream.
- Supports CEO and engages in stewardship and solicitation of top donors and board of directors for annual and capital projects.
- Develops procedures and is actively involved in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major gift prospects.
- Manages a portfolio of approximately 100 major gift prospective supporters and donors.
- Work jointly with related staff on special events to manage relationships with and solicit support from local businesses and corporations, and foundations as applicable
- Partners with the Finance team to track revenue and forecast annual projections on a monthly basis.
Fundraising
- Supports branch and leadership staff with annual campaign fundraising goals and revenue budgets according to short- and long-term goals.
- Works with Marketing/PR to produce relevant and informative fundraising literature for distribution to donors and the public.
- Collaborates with the Communications team to develop and execute a digital fundraising strategy.
- Visions and strategizes plans for fundraising activities, campaigns, and events with branch leaders.
- Plans and oversees the Association’s key fundraising events.
- Oversees timely and accurate fundraising, grant and donor reports for all internal and external audiences.
- Develops systems and manages resources needed to carry out fundraising plans.
- Develops and oversees fundraising policies and procedures.
Management & Staff Development
- Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates department staff.
- Provides strong leadership and effective management for the Philanthropy/Financial Development team, creating an environment of respect, creativity, opportunities for growth and professional education.
- Leadership resource for VP of Financial Development and the team to facilitate the successful execution of project assignments to reach annual fundraising goals.
- Organizes team roles and evaluates staff performance.
- Manages the work responsibilities to ensure deliverables of fundraising and capital campaigns are met or exceeded.
- Provides training and resources in fundraising across all levels of staff, volunteers, and board members.
- Educates, motivates, and provides feedback to staff and volunteers involved in the fundraising process.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Degree in a related field along with an advanced degree and/or CFRE credential strongly preferred. Relevant experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
- A minimum of eight (8) years of nonprofit, development leadership managing a team raising $5-$10M annually.
- Experience in Major Gifts and direct face-to-face solicitation.
- Experience leading a capital fundraising campaign from public phase to stewardship.
- Direct accountability for engaging with Boards of Directors, groups of civic/high-net worth leadership, and key individuals in roles of influence and affluence.
- Knowledge of best practices within the fundraising field.
- Proven ability to motivate, inspire and manage peers, volunteers, donors, diverse teams and/or directors.
- Critical and strategic thinker with a demonstrated ability to translate strategy into successful operational outcomes.
- A strong acumen toward the management of day-to-day details and incremental goal accomplishments.
- Excellent, effective listener and communicator (both verbal and written).
- Demonstrated experience with Raiser's Edge and Microsoft Office Suite preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work is performed in a fast-paced office and remote environment. Position requires attending meetings at different off-site locations.
- Visual acuity is required for reading computer screens and/or documents and making changes as necessary/required.
- Job requires high levels of alertness and concentration. This position requires analytical abilities and multitasking in order to identify problems and recommend solutions.
- Job requires accuracy and attention to detail, organizational, and time management skills, while maintaining high levels of initiative in order to work within deadlines.
- Incumbent must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time, as well as, able to manipulate keyboards, telephone keypads, and writing utensils is essential.
