General Description:

The Civil Estimator will gather and analyze data to estimate the money, materials, labor and time that will be required for a project. They often visit construction sites and collaborate with contractors, engineers, architects and clients. The ideal candidate will have excellent numerical skills and an analytical mindset. The candidate must also be thorough and apt in managing relationships with key persons. They make recommendations for how costs can be reduced and maintain detailed records of estimated and actual costs throughout the project. Some of their specific responsibilities include:

  • Preparing estimates and purchase orders in detail for all products and materials
  • Explore documentation in order to gain a deep understanding of the project requirements
  • Identify labor, material & time requirements by studying proposals, blueprints, specifications, & other related documents
  • Compose costs by analyzing labor, material & time requirements
  • Perform complex analysis of collected data and metrics
  • Understanding the scope of the work and ensuring timely completion of estimates
  • Assist with take-off for job proposals/bids and Change order preparation and fast turnaround proposals/quantity takeoffs for field personnel.
  • Managing bid pricing from all vendors and preparing a detailed cost analysis
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with subcontractors and vendors
  • Gather project/bid requirements.
  • Solicit participation from all vendors and subcontractors.
  • Prepare and attend all Bid Reviews conducted by Management.
  • Attend Pre-Bid meetings as required.
  • Communicating with trade partners and team members regarding the cost estimates and actual costs of new and current projects
  • Presents prepared estimate by assembling and displaying numerical and descriptive information
  • Maintains cost data base by entering and backing up data
  • Conduct research to obtain data on labor costs, materials, production times etc.
  • Use software for data analysis, forecasting and budgeting
  • Maintains technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing technical publications
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as estimatoror similar position. Estimating experience for large civil site development, underground utilities construction (Water, sewer, storm drains), Roadways construction etc. (Working experience with DOT/municipalities a plus).
  • Understanding of construction language, materials and methods and ability to communicate effectively within the construction environment.
  • Familiarity with financial and project management principles
  • In depth knowledge of research and data analysis methods and estimation formulas
  • Exquisite math and IT ability with an analytical mindset
  • Proficient in relevant software (Planswift)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel, Outlook & Word required
  • Outstanding communication and negotiation abilities
  • Thoroughness and reliability
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • BSc/BA in engineering, construction science or relevant discipline
  • Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) will be an asset
  • Ability to multi-task

Technical skills: These include numeracy and computer skills required to complete the tasks associated with this role. Estimators need strong math skills to calculate the labor, equipment and material to estimate the total cost for a construction project. They also need to be proficient with a computer to use software like spreadsheets and databases.

Analytical skills: These skills refer to a person s ability to gather and analyze information to solve problems. Estimators need to be able to consider and analyze different manufacturing or construction methods to identify the most cost-effective solution.

Communication skills: These skills include both written and verbal communication as well as active listening and the ability to recognize nonverbal cues. Cost estimators need to be able to communicate to management and contractors the expenses related to a project. They need written communication skills to create bids for projects, and they must be able to communicate verbally with the sales team. They must also be able to write comprehensive reports to help managers make decisions regarding production methods and project timelines.

Attention to detail: Minor changes in estimates can have a significant impact on the overall cost of a project, especially when related to the cost of individual materials that are required in bulk or hourly labor costs. Estimators must have strong attention to detail to avoid oversights or errors.

Time management skills: Cost estimators must be able to prepare estimations on time and are often working on fixed deadlines. They must be able to manage their time effectively and work efficiently.
