Sound to Harbor Early Learning/Head Start is looking to hire preschool Classroom Bus Assistants for the 2023-2024 School Year. We have 8 centers in the Thurston County: Lacey, Yelm, Rainier, Rochester, Friendly Grove, Hawks Prairie, West Olympia and South Puget Sound Community College.

These positions are 8 hours/day and 180-203 days/year. Work calendar will be determined by school program. Benefits include Medical/Dental/Vision, Life/AD&D insurance, FSA/DCAP, LTD insurance, Retirement/DCP, EAP, Sick Leave, Personal Leave and Holiday Pay. The salary range includes the potential of a .70 cent bilingual differential as determined by program need.

Starting Salary Range: $17.11- $17.81, Depending on Education and Bilingual Abilities/Need. Beginning September 1st, Starting Salary Range will Increase to $18.92 - $19.62, Depending on Education and Bilingual Abilities/Need.

Full Salary Range: $17.11-$19.39, Depending on Education and Bilingual Abilities/Need. Beginning September 1st, Full Salary Range will Increase to $18.92 - $20.67, Depending on Education and Bilingual Abilities/Need.

Purpose Statement

The job of ELP- Classroom/Bus Assistant is done for the purpose/s of providing age-appropriate activities of children enrolled in the Head Start program under the direction of the Center Director; providing clerical support to teachers; assisting in maintaining a clean and safe classroom environment for the students; assisting students while they are being transported to and from school; and providing discipline, guidance, and safety to the students while they are on the bus.

Essential Functions

  • Assists preschool students (e.g. tying shoes, mittens, hats, coats, etc.) for the purpose of providing for their needs during transport, safe loading and unloading from buses including both emergency situations and normal transport.
  • Assists teachers in the supervision of students in various outdoor activities for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Assists the teacher with age appropriate activities by working with individual or small groups of students (e.g. games, art, music, science, language, nutrition, etc.) for the purpose of guiding and/or reinforcing learning concepts and by addressing student's needs.
  • Distributes instructional and/or play materials for the purpose of providing students with necessary items and assisting the teacher in the classroom.
  • Instructs preschool students for the purpose of enforcing rules and regulations and providing positive discipline and guidance for students.
  • Maintains classroom equipment and work area for the purpose of ensuring availability of items and/or providing for a clean and safe learning environment.
  • Monitors children in various activities (e.g. lunch, snack time, rest periods, group or individual play, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g. copying, attendance, etc.) for the purpose of supporting the teacher and/or providing necessary records/instructional materials.
  • Prepares written materials for the purpose of documenting activities, providing reliable information, and complying with district, state and federal requirements.
  • Promotes good habits for the purpose of improving the quality of student outcomes and encouraging student development.
  • Reports observations and incidents (e.g. discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate personnel.
  • Secures students and/or equipment (e.g. wheelchairs, seat belts, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safety and welfare of students.
