Job Summary

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist I is responsible for high complexity testing and reporting laboratory results for all test methods approved by CLIA, CAP, and NY. The individual works under general supervision and is responsible for tasks, duties, and complex tests in all areas of the laboratory according to established laboratory protocols and procedures. In this role the individual performs pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical liquid biopsy, R&D experiments, and PCR testing.

Essential Job Duties

• Independently performs Molecular Biology PCR, liquid biopsy, and other related CLIA high complexity tests.
• Performs test calibrations and runs Quality Control material at appropriate intervals.
• Determines the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria in testing procedures.
• Performs R&D experiments as they related to current or future LDT development.
• Evaluates the acceptability of routine analysis prior to releasing patient reports. Takes appropriate action in response to critical values or unusual or unexpected results, and documents action taken.
• Determines calculated results utilizing testing data by means of manual or computerized procedures.
• Accurately enters testing results. Checks the computer review reports to monitor accurate reporting of laboratory results.
• May be asked to operate and provide technical expertise with lab automation and liquid handlers.
• Responsible for performing preventative maintenance and/or calibration of laboratory equipment and properly documenting actions taken.
• Prioritizes daily tasks and workflow to ensure turnaround time is met.
• Ensures preventative maintenance is performed on all instruments.
• Ensures testing quality is maintained per QC guidelines and SOPs.
• Monitors all QA records and procedures.
• Writes standard operation procedures (SOPs) and prepares technical manuals.
• Maintains lab performance for timeliness of reports, specimen integrity, and sample resolutions.

Education/Experience/Skills

• Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience and a Bachelors degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or related scientific discipline with current California State Generalist Clinical Laboratory Scientist license.
• Must have expertise in one or more of the following: Extraction of nucleic acids (DNA&RNA) from body fluids (e.g. whole blood), Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), analysis of sequence variation in genomic DNA Real time Quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) expression analysis of RNA, Genomic DNA sequencing either traditional Sanger or Next Generation Sequencing, ELISA protein-based assays and other liquid biopsy immunoassay platforms.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to produce accurate, punctual reports and information as required.

The estimated base salary range for this role is: $120,000 - $135,000 annually. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data.
