Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Other duties may be assigned.
- The CLS is responsible for specimen processing, test performance and for reporting test results.
- Only performs tests that are authorized by the Laboratory Director, based on degree of skill commensurate with the individual's education, training or experience, and technical abilities.
- Follows the laboratory's pre-analytic and analytic procedures and maintains records of tests;
- Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
- Adheres to the laboratory's quality assurance procedures, including documenting all:
- Quality control activities.
- Instrument and equipment verifications.
- Maintenance and preventive maintenance.
- Follows the laboratory's policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established performance specifications.
- Identifies and documents problems that may adversely affect test performance and notifies the Supervisor, Assistant Director(s) or Director.
- Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
- Identifies opportunities for workflow improvement and supports implementation.
- Documents and reviews laboratory quality procedures as a Quality Assurance Committee member.
- Ensures all work is performed in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations and participates in all regulatory inspections.
- Assists, trains new employees, and implements departmental standard operating procedures.
- Provides direct and constant guidance to unlicensed personnel.
Qualifications
- Active California Department of Public Health Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license or Clinical Genomics Molecular Biology Scientist (CGMBS) license required.
- Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent work experience.
- Must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Must be detail-oriented and comfortable with technology.
- Must have good written and oral communication skills.
- Experience in high complexity clinical laboratory testing, preferably in molecular diagnostics.
- Performance of molecular testing (PCR, Microarray, Sanger/NGS sequencing) a plus.
- Strong computer skills across diverse platforms.
- Excellent interpersonal communication and team player attitude.
- Ability to adapt to change and a rapid work pace.
- Maintains continuing education units required by California Department of Health Services and New York State Department of Health.
- Flexibility and willingness to adapt to change and pursuit of continuous improvement efforts and be part of process improvement group discussions.
- Ability and willingness to support the goals of the department with regard to staffing needs on weekends, holidays, on call, and overtime.
Physical Requirements
- Repetitive movement of hands, arms and leg, fingers (typing and/or writing).
- Exposure to general office environment conditions.
- Occasionally required to lift up to 20 pounds.
- Requires sitting (15% of time), walking (10% of time), and standing (75% of time).
- Must be able to thrive when exposed to high pressure/high stress situations.
