University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center (SJMC) Nursing Clinical Scholar Program

Our Clinical Scholar Program offers talented senior-year nursing students an opportunity to earn valuable nursing scholarship financial assistance while supporting their smooth transition from the classroom to the professional workplace. The program is available to local schools of nursing, but please check with your school to see if they are participating in the program with SJMC. Qualified students receive a scholarship amount of $12,000 for their last semester of school in exchange for a two-year commitment to SJMC on the unit of hire. To be considered, each student must complete an on-line application as well as the clinical scholar application packet and must complete their senior practicum on the scholar unit of hire. We will offer positions at both downtown and midtown campuses.

The Clinical Nurse I role is reserved for the new graduate or nurse with less than 12 months experience. The nurse will utilize this time to learn the institution and nursing practice. It is expected that a nurse in this role:

• Successfully passes the probationary period within 12 months (18 months maximum with a defined action plan developed with manager)
• Completes the new grad residency program
• Utilizes the nursing process as the frame of reference for practice as a professional nurse
• Participates in activities to develop own practice and to support group practice goals at the unit level
• Functions effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team
• Is accountable to patient, family and team members for care provided and to the nurse manager for totality of work performance.

Minimum Qualifications:

• To be eligible for the Clinical Scholar Program, you must be entering your senior year and have a GPA of 3.0 or greater.
