Salary Range:

  • Hiring salary is anticipated at $4,600 - $5,500 per month commensurate with education or experience
  • CSU Salary Range: $4,354 -$7,474 per month

Position Summary:

The Carpenter I at California State University Maritime Academy is the entry class and first journeyman level of the series. The Carpenter reports to the Director of Facilities and takes work direction and is supervised by the Chief Engineer. This position will be responsible for a full range of rough and finished skilled carpentry around campus. In addition, the incumbent will complete and plan out remodeling and minor construction work on buildings and structures. They will also make necessary repairs to interior and exterior structures, refinishing and building furniture as well as build and hang signs around the campus.

Established in 1929, California State University Maritime Academy, a campus of the California State University, is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. Located on the scenic Vallejo waterfront, the campus serves a student population of approximately 1000 undergraduates and 50 graduate students

Cal Maritime offers seven baccalaureate degrees in Business Administration, Global Studies and Maritime Affairs, Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Transportation and Oceanography. The undergraduate curriculum includes licensing programs for future merchant marine, coast guard and naval reserve officers. Cal Maritime also offers a Master of Science in Transportation and Engineering Management degree, as well as a number of extended learning programs and courses.

Major Responsibilities:

Carpenters are journey-level skilled trades workers responsible for the full range of rough and finished skilled carpentry work.

  • Incumbents erect, maintain, and repair various buildings and structures and may instruct and lead unskilled assistants.
  • Incumbents work from blueprints, specifications, drawings and instructions to build, remodel, maintain and repair various types of facilities, buildings, offices, classrooms, restrooms, sheds, scaffolds, forms, frames, fences and other structures
  • Install, build and repair internal and external structures; install and repair dry wall, ceiling and floor tiles, and roofs; make cabinets, counters, shelves, benches, partitions, floors, and door and window frames; hang doors and install windows; assist in making concrete molds and structures; perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures; maintain a safe and clean work environment;
  • Maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems; prepare standard reports; and consult and work with other trades workers.
  • Clean, maintain and service tools and equipment used in the performance of duties

  • Keep records and make simple reports via spreadsheets and word documents
  • Advise in the selection of building materials
  • Operates all hand and power equipment typical of the trade i.e., power circular & reciprocating saws, drill motors, planers, and air tools.
  • Participates in safety meetings and instructs other staff in safe working methods
  • Make rough sketches of repair work and cost estimates; may install and repair modular furniture; advise in the selection and storage of building materials; inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations; inspect related work performed by contractors; estimate cost, time and materials for carpentry projects; participate in the maintenance and operations of a carpentry shop.

Required Qualifications:

Either:

Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in carpentry.

Or II

Four years of varied general carpentry experience. An Associate of Arts or Certificate of Arts Degree in Carpentry from an accredited community college may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of: Principles, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in carpentry; Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety applicable to carpentry; building codes.
  • Skill in: Both rough and finish carpentry and the use of hand and power carpentry tools.
  • Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; read blueprints and work from, and interpret, plans and specifications; recognize lumber grades and types; keep records and make simple reports; prepare rough sketches of carpentry work; and make estimates of material and labor.
  • Ability to do all the above and follow oral and written instructions; instruct and lead unskilled assistants.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completion of GED or Highschool Diploma
  • Completion of a Certified Carpentry apprenticeship program.
  • Knowledge in Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety for the State of California and California State Building Codes preferred.

Physical, Mental and Environmental Conditions:

  • 50% or more of the activities involve walking, standing, squatting, kneeling, or climbing, involves lifting heavy weight objects that may exceed 50 pounds.
  • On the job the employee is exposed to excessive noise, is around moving machinery, exposed to mark changes in temperature and/or humidity; exposed to dust, fumes, gases, radiation, microwave(circle) and drives motorized equipment.

Background Check: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check, DMV records check, fingerprinting and physical) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
