Position Summary & Duties Responsible

POSITION SUMMARY

Communications Coordinator will plan, develop, implement, and administer a comprehensive communication program for assigned division and/or county elected official(s). Work with internal departments within respective division to promote, publicize, and advance project objectives for elected official(s) initiative. Assignments to be coordinated through communication services director, deputy county manager, and county elected official(s).

Communications Coordinator will write and distribute press releases, brochures, and information packets related to the specific needs of the county departments and/or elected officials. Work directly with the media and/or other organizations in preparing and distributing public service announcements, fact sheets and other information about Metropolitan Detention Center. Develop public awareness programs using exhibits, photos, special public presentations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Duties and Responsibilities are dependent on the section assigned:

  • Respond and work directly with the media on all inquiries relating to assigned division and elected official(s).
  • Execute planning for events, including ribbon cutting ceremonies and groundbreaking events.
  • Write, develop, and coordinate the distribution of news releases, news articles, brochures, and information packets specific to the needs of assigned division and/or elected official(s).
  • Develop public awareness campaigns for county programs, services and initiatives using exhibits, videography, photography, special public presentations, and the use of the government access cable channel. Define the segment of public to be reached and execute the most effective techniques to reach the public, including social media.
  • Develop program and project budgets, goals and guidelines. Make recommendations on the use of county funds, resources, equipment and materials. Prepare bid specifications, monitor contracts and recommend the hiring of contractual personnel as needed.
  • Coordinate and schedule speaking engagements, special events and media interviews to convey information about specific programs, inquiries or events.
  • Write and edit speeches, proclamations, resolutions, certificates of award, and relevant commission meeting agenda items for assigned division and elected official(s).
  • Develop and coordinate the creation, design and layout of publications including the arrangement of print, photography, illustrations, and artwork.
  • Represent the county, in appearances with various media and make presentations, when assigned, to public, community organizations, businesses and other groups requesting Bernalillo County information.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive list of media and community communication mediums, write ads, produce calendar listings of events and public service announcements.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor an archive database. May maintain databases and files to track activities and history.
  • Supervise, train, direct and coordinate the work of county administrative support staff, project staff and/or contractual personnel as needed.
  • Develop and prepare summary reports of all areas of responsibilities.
  • Manage and update website content for assigned division and/or elected official(s).
  • Assist with managing and responding to Inspection of Public Record Act requests from general public and the media.
  • Write and produce short packages and mini-documentaries to promote county programs and initiatives.
  • Performs other job related duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, or related field, and eight (8) years of related work experience in public information. Any equivalent combination or related education and/or experience may be considered for the above requirements.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

The offer of this Bernalillo County position requires compliance with the following:

  • Employee must successfully complete the post-offer employment medical examination and background investigation.
  • Employee must comply with the safety guidelines of the County.
  • Employee must complete required FEMA training(s) as assigned to position.
  • Employee must complete required Supervisor classes if applicable.
  • Employee must have a valid New Mexico driver’s license by employment date and maintain a valid NM driver’s license while employed in this position.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Essential duties are performed primarily indoors (90%) and occasionally outdoors (10%).
  • Indoor duties are preformed in a temperature controlled environment. Worker is exposed to natural weather conditions while performing outdoor duties.
  • Indoor duties are performed on an even surface, which may be carpeted or tile.
  • Working surface is typically dry.
  • Outdoor duties may be performed on both even and uneven surfaces which may be either wet or dry.
  • Surfaces may be inclined or flat, and range from gravel, asphalt, or concrete.
  • Most duties are performed alone. Worker may perform certain duties as a part of a select team of individuals.

EQUIPMENT, TOOLS AND MATERIALS

  • Equipment typically used in the performance of duties include cameras, telephone, computer and photocopy machine.
  • Materials and products handled in the course of performing essential duties include files, forms, reports, various other paperwork, and a wide variety of basic office supplies.
  • County vehicle is used on an occasional basis.
