Communications Manager Job at Portage County
The Portage County Sheriff's office is looking to hire a full-time 911 Communications Manager to join their team!
Salary range: $67,681.46 - $81,754.52 / yr
Summary of Position:
Under general direction, manages, plans, directs and schedules the work of the Sheriff's Communications Center; regulates compliance of Center staff to agency goals and policies/procedures; responsible for administrative duties as required for reporting warrants, articles, and missing persons to the state as well as maintaining the records on these matters; responsible for short- and long-term planning, budgeting, organization and staffing of the Center; oversees the Center training program; counsels subordinates on employee performance matters and recommends corrective action as appropriate; oversees the routine testing, inspection, and maintenance of equipment ensuring a virtual 100% readiness rate and approves all related procedures; conducts basic troubleshooting of all dispatching systems; serves as subject matter expert in all aspects of the entire County communications system; prepares and maintains multiple levels of information relative to databases of the Enhanced 9-1-1 System; coordinates all activities in the Communications Center during emergencies, 24/7 as needed; serve as agency liaison with outside system users; coordinate and manage all aspects of the County communications system, including radios, towers, and infrastructure.
The Communications Manager is responsible for maintaining the hub of the County's emergency dispatching, public notification, and information system. The Communications Center, which is the primary responsibility of this position, serves 24/7/365 as the single Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP).
In addition to these duties, as needed, serve as a Communications Technician for the Sheriff's Office. This is accomplished by the receiving of emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance; transmitting information and dispatching law enforcement, fire and/or medical personnel and appropriate equipment through the use of telephone, data, and radio communications equipment; monitor all communication monitors and monitor and operate all equipment and alarms located in the Communication Center.

What are the education and experience requirements?
- High School diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience preferred.
- Minimum of one year of supervisory experience in a communications center or public safety answering point preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a communications center or public safety answering point preferred.
- Exemplary work record to which other employees can aspire.
- Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) and Transaction Information for the Management of Enforcement (TIME) system certified or achieve certifications within six months of hiring.
- Professional certification, such as Emergency Number Professional (ENP), preferred.
- Must be 18 years of age and U.S. citizen.
- No felony convictions unless pardoned by the Governor.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive materials, records and conversations.
- Must satisfactorily complete all required training during time period established by the department.
- Ability to handle several tasks simultaneously.
- Must have vision correctable to 20/20 to read documents that could include very small print, maps, multiple computer keyboards and monitors, etc.
- Successful candidates will be required to successfully complete the following: written/skills examination, oral interview, drug/alcohol screening, hearing test and psychological examination.
- Ability to pass a rigorous law enforcement background investigation.
- Good hearing or acuity correctable to normal with the ability to hear multiple conversations simultaneously, distinguish voices and able to wear a headset.
- Read, write, spell, and speak in clear, concise English.
- Ability to react quickly and effectively to stressful situations.
- Ability to perform data entry quickly and accurately.
