The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.
This position will be in support of Creative Forces®: NEA Military Healing Arts Network. Creative Forces is investing in activities intended to build better transitions between clinical treatment provided by creative arts therapists and community arts engagement for health, well-being and quality of life. The primary objective of the Community Arts Liaison is to work with Veterans to develop a transition plan that allows them to continue to experience the Whole Health benefits of arts engagement as they transition out of therapy, and then to assist Veterans in connecting to community-based arts resources aligned to those goals. Additionally, the Community Arts Liaison will develop a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities veterans and their families and caregivers face when accessing community-based arts programs as well as the challenges that arts organizations and teaching artists face in providing services to this population.
HJF is seeking a Community Arts and Wellness Liaison who will provide clinically-based knowledge and military cultural competence to inform relationship-building with arts engagement programs across Indiana as well as outreach, public awareness and cross-promotion of arts activities between the State, Regional and Local Arts Agencies, teaching artists and arts organizations, veteran services organizations, and clinical services. The ideal candidate will show commitment to participatory and collaborative decision-making with keen awareness of best practices for equity, access and inclusion in the arts. This position will be 20 hours per week during the standard business day. This is a project-based position for a year with the potential for extension.
Responsibilities:
  • Work with veterans to establish and advocate for Personal Health Goals, as part of the VA Whole Health Program, which can be supported through participation in community-based arts for health, well-being and quality of life. Liaison will work with veterans to identify their skills, strengths, supports and resources to achieve health goals. Liaison will serve as a primary point of contact to assist the veteran in navigating access to community-based arts-related programming to achieve their Personal Health Goals.
  • In collaboration with the State, Regional, and Local Arts Agencies, the Liaison will build and maintain a roster of teaching artists and arts organizations serving military-connected populations, including community arts engagement and outreach on behalf of lesser-represented military community members (ie LGBTQ, BIPOC, women). This list will be a resource to raise veterans’ awareness of available community-based arts opportunities as they pursue their health goals.
  • Seek and build connections between military-affiliated and other clinical services and community arts organizations to support the transition from clinical creative arts therapies to community-based arts engagement and ongoing wellness practices.
  • Work collaboratively with Creative Forces team members, State, Regional, and Local Arts Agencies to develop equitable engagement and capacity-building strategies for teaching artists and arts organizations serving the military community. Foster positive communication and understanding through clinically informed education and military cultural competence training.
  • Build relationships internally at the VA to facilitate easier communication and processes between arts organizations and the VA, leading to smoother clinic-to-community transitions for veterans.
  • Assist the Creative Forces Clinical Program Internal Evaluator with monitoring, evaluation, and learning activities, including developing a theory of change and logic model and collecting data to support program monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL).
  • Provide educational outreach regarding project objectives at events through presentations, meeting agendas and other event activities.
