POSITION SUMMARY:
The staff member in this position is responsible for meeting the nursing service needs of individuals by providing competent standards of care in direct and indirect care roles. The nurse will provide nursing care through effective interviewing and behavioral observations in order to reach sound conclusions and plan appropriate interventions with the individual. The nurse will combine biopsychosocial knowledge and psychopharmacological competency to identify actual and potential health problems.
The nurse will prioritize needs and treatment approaches to ensure appropriate delivery of care. The nurse will coordinate care with physicians, nurse practitioners, and other agency and external service providers as required (some care may be delivered via a telemedicine model). The nurse is responsible for assisting individuals with education about medications to ensure informed consent, administering and distributing medications, and assessing for medication side effects. If the nurse is a LPN, the nurse functions under the direction of a licensed medical practitioner, a RN, or other licensed professional authorized by regulations of the Board of Nursing. The direction of supervision may be provided on-site, via telephone, or other electronic means. The LPN will, at all times, have a designated medical professional to whom she or he will report. It is understood the designated medical professional may change based upon scheduling or capacity.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from an accredited nursing program and licensed as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse in Virginia with experience in psychiatric nursing. Recent EHR experience is preferred. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support Certificate or eligibility to be obtained. Must possess a valid Driver’s License, good driving record and the ability to provide own transportation.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- May be exposed to allergenic environments from client’s including, dust, smoke, pet contamination, etc.
- May be exposed to clients with infectious diseases
- Must be able to drive for long periods of time to visit other clinic sites in catchment area as needed
- Must be able to walk distances, climb and descend stairs, maneuver in and out of agency vehicles
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Must be able to stand for periods of time
- Must be able to lift/push/pull up to 25 pounds at times
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
The incumbent should possess thorough knowledge and understanding of basic nursing services and procedures. Working knowledge of psychiatric disorders, including the diagnosis and treatment, and of psychotropic, antidepressant, and anti-Parkinson medications and side effects. Some knowledge of counseling theory and technique, crisis intervention services, and guidelines for emergency detention and commitment. Familiarity with ACT and community-based models of treatment preferred. The position also requires the incumbent demonstrate skills in performing venipuncture, injections, obtaining vital signs, and administering first aid.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Medication administration/delivery, including oral and intra-muscular medications.
- Adheres to all requirements of the Va. Board of Pharmacy relative to ADS pharmacy license. Will maintain proper storage, securing and documentation of all medications as required by agency policy and pharmacy license.
- Monitors side effects, contraindications and drug reactions.
- Venipuncture/phlebotomy
- Provides education needs related to medications and physical health teaching as identified by the needs of the consumer.
- Provides consultation/education to agency staff around client needs.
- Performs TB testing for agency staff.
- Provides appropriate cross-trainings to ACT South staff per the evidence based practice.
- Participates in daily treatment team staffing to discuss treatment planning and client progress.
- Collaborates with other professionals on ACT Team to provide comprehensive services.
- Provides rotating coverage of on-call overnight shifts.
- Documents all service contacts accurately and in a timely basis in accordance with agency policy.
- Will apply and adhere to the Ethical Standards applicable to the nursing profession and licensure.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor which are consistent with the position and are in compliance with agency policies and procedures.
