Job Summary

Under the indirect supervision of the associate dean for operations, this position provides clarification, interpretation and guidance to department chairs, department and college committees, and department administrative support staff with respect to faculty hiring and appointments, special-session summer hiring and other special hires, term workload reconciliation, and more. This position also provides direct, primary administrative specialist functions and college-wide support, training, and services for tenure-track recruiting, lecturer hiring, and special hiring (visiting professors, professors of industry, volunteer appointments, summer session), entering term workload information for faculty non-teaching assignments, and processing CLA student assistants, working with the dean and associate deans as needed.

Department Summary

The College of Liberal Arts (CLA) consists of 18 academic departments and programs, with approximately 350 faculty and 70 staff, serving 3,500 students in 18 undergraduate majors, 4 graduate programs, and over 30 minors. The CLA includes disciplines that represent five broad areas of knowledge: the fine and performing arts, communications, the humanities, the social sciences, and interdisciplinary studies. In addition to offering courses for its own majors, CLA offers a significant proportion of courses in general education, as well as courses that support minors and serve as electives for all majors throughout the university. The CLA is also home to the foundational disciplines that form the scholarly bases for cultural awareness, knowledge and skills, making the college’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion central to the college's curriculum and identity. Further, the CLA plays a significant role in providing activities that enhance the cultural and intellectual environment of the campus, including exhibits and performances offered by our academic departments (e.g., Art, Music, Theatre & Dance) and Cal Poly Arts, cultural programs and lecture series offered by all of our departments, and co-curricular programs such as Mustang Media, Debate, and Model UN. The college's degree program offerings combined with its general education offerings comprise approximately 30% of the university’s instruction. The College of Liberal Arts has the largest general-fund operating budget of all the colleges on campus (about $45 million). The College is also the home of Cal Poly Arts and Spanos Theatre.

The college employs about 175 regular full-time tenured/tenure track faculty, with approximately 1/3 of those hired in the last 5 years. In addition, it employs another 175 full-time and part-time lecturers and approximately 70 staff members in various support roles and classification categories


Key Qualifications

  • Collaborates with the associate dean for operations, department chairs, CLA budget analyst, department administrative coordinators, and Academic Personnel to provide the full scope of duties involved in lecturer hiring for the college.
  • Serves as a first point of contact for the departments in the preparation and approval of part-time and full-time lecturer recruitments.
  • Reviews and track materials associated with the approval and use of the part-time pool.
  • Tracks full-scope contract processing for all lecturers, with special attention to 12.3 and 12.12 lecturers. Prepares, reviews for accuracy, and serves as a level of approval for the on-line lecturer contract information, including reviewing and entering assigned time, monitoring appointments for accuracy.
  • Handles and reviews lecturer files throughout the appointment process and keeps appointment information up-to-date.


Education and Experience

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university. Type 45 wpm. Three years of technical or administrative experience. A graduate degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.


Salary:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $56,000 - $66,000 annually


Classification Range: $42,216 - $81,492 annually
