Summary: This job entails planning, organizing and executing tasks as directed by the department supervisor and the program manager, to meet company objectives in new and existing manufacturing process development. Responsibilities include technical reviews, process development, equipment innovations, controls design, controls programming, troubleshooting existing controls, complete wiring schematics, hard wiring equipment and contributing program and electrical documentation to the equipment manuals. Additionally this position will be responsible to coordinate new equipment controls, programming and procurement with advanced design engineers, tooling engineers and plant manufacturing engineers.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Brainstorm controls for equipment and fixtures with designers and manufacturing engineers and coordinate such controls with engineers, tool makers and equipment builders to assure fluid transition of equipment qualifications with manufacturing engineers.
  • Conduct research and development activities to improve design, testing and manufacturing processes.
  • Participate in technical reviews with internal and external customers, prior to submission of customer quote.
  • Develop process, equipment, capital expenditure and capacity reviews prior to submission of customer quote.
  • Create control programs from concept models and final designs for new equipment.
  • Create detailed wiring schematic prints from design engineer’s direction.
  • Develop and maintain BOM (bill of materials) for all new equipment controls.
  • Order relative equipment hardware as directed.
  • Work with manufacturing engineering, operations, purchasing and quality departments to review quality, process performance and new product development.
  • Work with toolroom personnel to maintain a closed loop communication link to adjust, modify and document design changes.
  • Troubleshoot existing programs and wiring issues on in-service equipment.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The items listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

Minimum Education/Experience:

Associate’s degree or equivalent from a college or technical school. Four to ten years related experience, or demonstrated, equivalent combination of education and experience.

Communication:

Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents related to equipment design, specifications and manufacturing processes. Ability to communicate effectively, to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to effectively and persuasively communicate with customers, suppliers, management and co-workers, by phone, e-mail, online meetings, and direct presentations on controversial or complex topics.

Reasoning:

Ability to investigate problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form.

Computer Skills:

Plex, Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, Outlook, Power Point, and Autodesk Inventor.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position has no direct reports to supervise, however, they must possess the necessary management and supervisory skills to communicate, guide and direct several indirect reports to support the APQP process.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the functions of this job. The performance of this position will require exposure to the manufacturing areas, which will require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses with side shields and mandatory hearing protection. Overnight travel will be required to address customer and supplier activities.
