DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The Corrections Counselor is responsible for providing direct services to inmates and juvenile residents in adult and juvenile correctional facilities located within the Gila River Indian Community, (i.e., assess client strengths and weaknesses, develop and implement treatment plans, maintain current case notes, explore client problems, examine possible solutions/options, and participate in staffing). The incumbent will seek staffing/supervision with appropriate professionals regarding inmates and juvenile residents who exhibit severely mentally ill behavior.

The Counselor will facilitate individual counseling and group therapy and provide training and clinical expertise to the counseling team.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Conduct screenings and intakes, complete psychosocial assessments, and conduct educational groups for inmates and juvenile residents referred to the department's program for services. Provide orientation information to the client after admission into a program for services. Develop treatment plans cooperatively and refer inmates and juvenile residents to other agencies and services as needed.
  • Provide individual and family counseling, case management activities as needed, and information concerning alcohol and drug abuse to inmates and juvenile residents. Facilitate therapeutic groups with inmates and juvenile residents.
  • Maintain counseling records, writes summaries, reports and complete all necessary paperwork in a timely manner. Provide limited transportation, in service training for department staff as requested, crisis intervention counseling and on-call service.
  • Provide in-service training for department staff as requested.
  • Refer to appropriate sources for treatment of the severely mentally ill client. Conduct one-on-one meetings with inmates regarding programming matters and resolve situations within the framework of policy.
  • Maintain a caseload of inmates with the primary purpose of resolving daily living issues before they expand into significant incidents.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:

  • Knowledge and understanding of cultural, economic, educational and social issues related to Native American population and in particular the Gila River Indian Community.
  • Considerable knowledge of chemical dependency, mental illness, counseling theories and therapeutic techniques.
  • Basic knowledge of Law and Ethics in Behavioral Health.
  • Skill in interviewing, problem solving, assessment, case planning and counseling.
  • Skill in maintaining a professional clinical relationship with clients and family.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain strict standard of confidentiality.
  • Ability to work with community agencies in order to coordinate services for clients and their families.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, Community Officials and the public.
  • Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position; agree to maintain a Drug-free workplace.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Psychology, Counseling, Sociology, Social

Work or closely related field and three (3) years’ work experience performing professional counseling services for an agency or organization.

  • Experience performing professional counseling to inmates in a correctional facility and experience with community resources and tribal culture preferred.
  • Master’s degree preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be licensed or certified in Substance Abuse Counseling or a related Behavioral Health Field license or certification, must be provided at the time of applying, and as a condition of employment must continue to maintain licensure or certification throughout duration of employment.
  • An Independent Professional Behavioral Health License is preferred.
  • CPR Certification or must be able to obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • May be required to work weekends and evenings.
  • Required to pass a background check and fingerprint clearance as a condition of employment and must continue to maintain throughout duration of employment. Background checks are required for positions that involve regular contact with or control over Community Children in accordance with * The Indian Child *

Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, 25 U.S.C. Sections 3201 through 3210 and C.F.R. Part 63 and positions that have regular contact with the Elderly.

  • Must satisfactorily complete annual skill and knowledge testing.
  • Required mandatory reporter pursuant to Title 7, Chapter 2 (7.205), B.
  • Required to attend Title 7 Mandatory Reporting training on a yearly basis.
  • Required to obtain a Tribal Operator’s permit. Valid state driver’s license with a current proof of driving record for the past 39 months will be required to qualify for a tribal driving permit . Proof of driving record

must be submitted with application and must not be more than 60 days old from the date of submission

of the application.
