WORK ENVIROMENT:

Clinical laboratory environment. Exposed to risk of bloodborne/airborne disease.
Must wear protective equipment (gloves, gowns/lab coats, eye protection, face protection). May be exposed to odorous chemicals and specimens.
Moderate noise environment. Subject to injury from sharps. May be required to work hours beyond typical 8 a.m.-5 p.m. schedule.
Will work/be on call rotating Saturday's (7-8 per year) and work rotating holidays.

JOB SUMMARY: Under limited supervision, demonstrates independent judgment in the preparation of biological specimens for cytogenetic analyses. Performs analyses, prepares and describes karyotypes, and communicates results to laboratory director, physicians and other technicians.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree with coursework in the Basic Sciences and Chemistry and NCA certified as a clinical laboratory specialist in cytogenetics (CLSp(CG)) required. Master's degree in Genetics and eligible for NCA certification as clinical laboratory specialist in cytogenetics preferred.

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: NCA certified as a clinical laboratory specialist in cytogenetics (CLSp(CG)).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Performs routine procedures in Cytogenetic Laboratory including recording sample and patient information, culturing, harvesting, slide making and routine banding on at least one sample type.
• Performs photomicroscopy and/or computer enhancements.
• Performs karyotypic analysis at the microscope and from photographs in addition to routine karyotyping. Interprets karyotypic results.
• Performs all aspects of culturing and processing of amniotic fluid, lymphocyte, and tissue cultures; performs routine banding procedures; understanding of sterile techniques. Scans slides and counts chromosomes at the microscope level.
• Prepares final chromosome analysis and report from culture initiation to final analysis of karyotypes.
• Familiar with various banding techniques and ability to perform specialized banding techniques.
• Communicates results to laboratory director, physicians and other technicians.
• Contributes to the smooth and efficient operation of the section and department and performs quality control maintenance.
• Exhibits and promotes the professional image of laboratories in accordance with hospital, department, and professional society philosophies, goals and standards of laboratory testing.
• Protects self, coworkers and facility by following approved policies and procedures to prevent the spread of blood borne and/or airborne diseases. Uses engineering controls, work practice controls and appropriate personal protective equipment as indicated in the section task list.
• Adheres to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team building.

Performs other related duties incidental to work described herein.
