GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To work as a Digital Forensics Analyst within the Computer Crimes Unit of the Rhode Island State Police; to conduct computer forensic analysis services to include preservation, acquisition, authentication, validation, analysis, and recovery of digital data in computer hardware and computer software. This position involves critical duties and responsibilities that must continue to be performed during crisis situations and contingency operations, which may require extended hours of work .
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under general supervision of a superior. Work is reviewed for conformance to policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.

Illustrative Examples of Work Performed

  • Work within the Computer Crimes Unit of the Rhode Island State Police, including being an active member of the Rhode Island Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC) and the Rhode Island Joint Cyber Task Force (JCTF).
  • Conduct digital forensic analysis and services, in accordance with industry best practices or the policy, procedures, and practices of the Rhode Island State Police, including preservation, acquisition, validation, and analysis of digital data contained in computer hardware and software, including but not limited to desktop computers, laptop computers, hard drives, removable media, mobile devices, network servers and devices, and any other digital devices.
  • Analyze and review extensive data and information containing graphic images, obscene videos, and other objectionable content.
  • Participate, in the capacity of a Digital Forensics Analyst, in the search and acquisition of digital media at offsite locations and crime scenes.
  • Maintain care, custody, and control of evidence.
  • Produce competent written technical and non-technical reports.
  • Testify in local, state, and federal courts as an expert witness and be familiar with legal terminology and court procedures.
  • Conduct testing and research to stay up to date with the latest digital forensic technologies and methods.
  • Participate in continuing education, including formal and informal training in order to maintain demonstrated competency and industry certifications.
  • Assist in the maintenance of forensic network servers, storage devices, and forensic workstations with hardware and software updates, network connectivity, and clean forensic environments.
  • Act as a liaison for other law enforcement forensic analysts (local, state, federal) as an expert on forensic practices and procedures.
  • Perform peer review of technically complex cases.
  • Comply with directives of law enforcement personnel.
  • Work with Rhode Island State Police Records Management Information Systems personnel and other technical personnel.
  • Perform additional duties, as required.

Required Qualifications for Appointment

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other (KSAO): Demonstrated knowledge of the digital forensics process and digital devices.
  • Experience with industry tools such as Encase, X-Ways, FTK, Griffeye, Magnet AXIOM, Cellebrite UFED.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to clearly articulate computer and information technology concepts to a non-technical audience.
  • Strong analytical and investigative skills to identify patterns and draw conclusions based on evidence and find connections between data sources.
  • The ability to conduct testing research in digital forensics.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with legal terminology and court process and procedure.
  • Possess communication skills to work in a multi-disciplined and multi-jurisdictional environment to meet goals and objectives.
  • The ability to produce competent written technical and non-technical reports.
  • The ability to work under time constraints and produce quality work product under a heavy workload, while maintaining organization of projects and assignments.

Education and Experience:
Education : Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related/applicable fields or equivalent experience; a concentration or certification in digital forensics preferred.
Experience : Such as may have been gained through employment in a Digital Forensics Analyst position consisting of performing analyses of digital media in a forensic capacity.
Or : any combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.

Prior to appointment:
  • Selected candidate must successfully pass an extensive background investigation conducted by the Rhode Island State Police.
Following appointment:
  • Must successfully complete a 130-working day probationary period.
  • Must be willing to participate in mental health counseling and programs intended for employee and workplace well-being.
