Nevada County is seeking to hire a temporary Defensible Space Inspector. These are long-term assignments where individuals, with general supervision, coordinate and conduct defensible space inspections and work with property owners to achieve compliance with the Nevada County Hazardous Vegetation Ordinance. The Defensible Space Inspector position encompasses educating individuals and organizations on topics related to fire prevention (Defensible Space and Home Hardening).

The Defensible Space Inspector will be responsible for drafting detailed inspection reports as well as interpreting and applying the Nevada County Defensible Space Ordinance. The ideal candidate should have the qualities listed below:

  • Organized
  • Detail oriented
  • Confident learning new computer applications (Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, ArcGIS Field Maps and Accela)
  • Strong communication skills (Written and Verbal)
  • Outstanding customer service

A Defensible Space Inspector (Temporary) is an integral part of Nevada County whose mission is to serve and safeguard the people and protect the property and resources of the community! This position is crafted for individuals who have graduated from high school and have at lease one year of fire prevention, defensible space training or related experience. No college degree is required but if you have an associate degree in Forestry, Fire Science or Environmental Science, that’s a plus! Furthermore, individuals who have taken the following training courses will be highly preferred:

  • Federal Emergency Management Agency IS-100 Introduction to the Incident Command System
  • Federal Emergency Management Agency IS-700 NIMS: An Introduction
  • National Fire Protection Association Assessing Wildfire Hazards in the Home Ignition Zone
  • Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Defensible Space Assessor Training
  • California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Defensible Space Inspector Training

Sick Leave:
Temporary County employees shall accrue at the rate of one (1) hour of sick leave for each thirty (30) hours worked effective July 1, 2015. Temporary County employees can accrue a maximum of 48 hours of sick leave per fiscal year.

Medical Benefits:
Temporary employees whose assignments average 30 hours per week or more are eligible to enroll in County-sponsored medical benefits.
