Job Description

$58,997.12/hour (28.3640/hour) with no prior experience

$58,997.12/hour (28.3640/hour) + half credit for years of certified LE experience in Virginia. Approximately 3% increase for every 2 years of prior experience.

Performs responsible protective service work in the Sheriff's Office involving a variety of general or support duty assignments and involving an element of personal danger; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Deputy Sergeant.

Examples of Duties

Enforcing laws; investigating criminal activity; serving civil papers; ensuring safety of public; testifying in Court; maintaining records and files; preparing reports.

On an assigned shift, operates a patrol vehicle to observe for violations of traffic laws, suspicious activities or persons and disturbances of law and order;

Responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints; Makes arrests, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints; Subdues resisting suspects using weapons, maneuvers and other approved self-defense methods;

Enforces traffic laws; issues citations for traffic violations;

Fills out arrest records; takes fingerprints and photographs; performs prisoner security functions; investigates traffic accidents;

Interviews victims and witnesses; secures property and evidence; Prepares detailed reports on activities and assignments; Serves civil process and criminal arrest warrants;

Performs a variety of crime prevention duties; may serve as DARE officer or other special assignments.

Typical Qualifications

Graduation from high school or high school equivalency. Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Must meet and maintain all Stafford County Sheriff's department and State Criminal Justice System training and education requirements for position. Required to be a United States citizen and at least 21 years of age.

Physical Requirements:

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; and some work requiring the lifting or dragging, for short distances, of 165 pounds of weight occasionally; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and wearing a respirator. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

Supplemental Information

Deputies work an assigned 11.5-hour shift (0530-1700; 1500-0230; 1830-0600) rotating on/off duty in a 3 on >2 off >2 on >3 off pattern.

The successful applicant must pass written and physical agilities testing, interview, polygraph examination, full background investigation to include a criminal history check, physical examination, psychological examination and drug and alcohol testing.

EXAMINATION SCHEDULE AND NOTIFICATION TO ATTEND WRITTEN TEST WRITTEN TEST - Everyone submitting an application will be required to participate in a written examination. The test will be graded on site and the candidate will be advised of his/her score. A score of seventy-percent (70%) or above is required to advance in the process. The Sheriff may waive this portion of the selection process in the event of prior police experience (Virginia DCJS Certification in law enforcement) or other factors as determined by the Sheriff. Applicants should be prepared to commit approximately 3 hours for this examination.

PHYSICAL AGILITY - Upon receiving a passing score on the written examination, the applicant will have two opportunities to run the PAT course within the 1 minute 36 second time limit. The test consists of a 150-yard course that measures stamina and cardiovascular fitness in the completion of various job- related physical skills (running/sprinting, crawling, climbing, dragging 150lbs, trigger pull etc.). The applicant must successfully complete ten (10) obstacles in succession. Participants must complete all events in the specified sequence or they fail the course.
