Position Overview

The City of Henderson announces an examination to create an eligibility list and to fill current and future vacancies for the classification of Detention Center Technician in the Corrections Division of the Henderson Police Department. The eligibility list may be utilized to fill vacancies for this classification for up to six months or up to one (1) year.

Under general supervision, performs specialized clerical duties processing inmates through the Henderson Detention Center; and performs related duties as assigned.
  • Ideal candidates for this position will have strong technical skills in utilizing computers for inputting data accurately within multiple daily deadlines and will be able to effectively manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ideal candidates will possess effective teamwork and communication skills, and will display flexibility daily in switching tasks based on constant changing priorities.

IMPORTANT POSITION INFORMATION
This position is required to:
  • Work any shift - Including swing and graveyard shifts, an alternative or flexible work schedule outside normal business hours, which will include evenings, weekends, holidays, extended hours, overtime, and mandated overtime as necessary. Candidates may also be required to work overtime with little to no advanced notice.
  • Work in the jail environment - Including working with professional staff, officers from multiple jurisdictions, inmates who may be belligerent, mentally ill, intoxicated, around noise, dust, body wastes and fluids, odors, and typical hygiene issues from inmates common to a jail facility.
  • Successfully complete a structured training program that is approximately 16 weeks long, but may be extended based on the candidates progression through out their training. Throughout the program, strong individual initiative must be demonstrated in order to study, learn, and apply the concepts, policies, and procedures that incumbents will be rated and evaluated on during the program, and during the probationary period.

  • External, probationary full-time, part-time, and temporary City of Henderson employees will start at the first step of the salary range.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school, or the equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of experience performing general clerical duties involving contact with the public
  • Note: An equivalent combination of related training and experience may be considered.
  • Skill in typing sufficient to type 35 net words per minute at the time of application.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Nevada or "border state" driver's license, as defined by NRS 483.
  • Must obtain certification in NCIC within six (6) months from date of appointment as a condition of continued employment.
  • Desirable: One year of clerical experience in a criminal justice agency.
  • Desirable: Multi-tasking experience.

TYPING REQUIREMENTS:
This position requires candidates to type 35 words per minute. Candidates will be required to complete an online typing test to verify that they meet the minimum typing requirements listed in the job description. Applicants will be sent an email with a link to the typing test. This test must be completed by the date/time listed in the notice/invite. Applicants who successfully complete the online typing test will be moved to minimum qualification review. Since this online typing test is unproctored, candidates will be required to validate their typing test (retest) in a proctored environment and will be required to pass the typing portion based on the number of net words per minute (WPM) listed in the minimum qualifications on the job description. Candidates must pass both the online and in-person typing tests in order to move forward in the recruitment process.

There are free practice typing tests online if you would like to gauge your speed and practice prior to the assessment date. However, you must pass the test we administer, and we will utilize the score you receive from our exam.

ASSESSMENT DATES:

Preliminary Typing Test (Pass/Fail) - Virtual Typing Test - Test invites will be sent out on a rolling basis.

Technical Examination and Typing Test Validation (Weighted 30%) (Best Qualified Candidates) - Test invites will be sent out on Monday, January 9, 2023 and applicants will have until Wednesday, January 11, 2023 to complete their examination.

Facility Tour (Top-Scoring Candidates) (Not weighted) - Week of January 16, 2023

Oral Board Interview (Weighted 70%) - Wednesday, January 25, 2023 and/or Thursday, January 26, 2023

Selection Interview (Top Scoring Candidates) - Wednesday, February 1, 2023 and/or Thursday, February 2, 2023

Please check your email and/or text messages on a regular basis after submitting your application for complete instructions, which include where and when to report.

Note: Requests for sit-along(s) or private tours with the City of Henderson Corrections Division are not available during the duration of this recruitment.

Selection Process

The selection process will begin with an employment application package screening, with the best-qualified candidates being invited to participate further in the assessment process. This process may include any combination of written, performance, and oral assessments to evaluate job-related education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities. NOTE: The City reserves the right to modify selection devices and test instruments in accordance with accepted legal, ethical, and professional standards. Some candidates may be disqualified indefinitely due to the results of their background investigation.

** NOTE TO CURRENT EMPLOYEES:
  • Pursuant to the Teamsters collective bargaining agreement, regular full-time current employees successfully completing the testing process will be placed on an eligibility list to be used to fill vacancies in this classification for up to six (6) months.
  • Probationary full-time, part-time and temporary employees who have worked at least three (3) continuous months with the CITY may apply for this recruitment. These employees and external candidates who successfully complete the testing process will be placed on separate lists, each of which may be used to fill vacancies for up to one (1) year. If the vacancy is not filled through promotion by full-time employees, the next opportunity for placement will be to hire qualified probationary full-time, regular part-time and temporary employees. If the vacancy is not filled using either of these two lists, the next opportunity is to hire external candidates.

    • Accrued at 9.5 hours per month after first year through fifth year; 12.67 hours per month sixth through twelfth year; 15.83 hours per month upon completion of twelfth year and beyond.
  • Sick Leave
    • Accrued at 9.5 hours per month from date of hire.
  • Bereavement Leave
    • Three consecutive days of leave, with pay, per occurrence, to attend funeral for immediate family member; increased to one work week when funeral is held 400 statute miles or more from City of Henderson.
  • Holidays
    • 12 paid holidays per year.
    • Two (2) floating holidays per year.

WORK WEEK

  • Four day, 9.5 hour work day, 38 hour work week.
